Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Mr. and Mrs. AMA,
I am writing to inform about the noise problem I am facing because of you. As your apartment is on the upper level the high sound of your music system directly come to my space.
Every Sunday you both organize party at your place. Although I do not have an issue with your parties, the high-volume music makes me uncomfortable. Due to this, I usually feel uncomfortable to get a proper sleep at night and I wake up late in the morning. This is also impacting my focus on work especially on Mondays'. I also tried to talk to you about this, unfortunately, you did not answer my call. That is why I decided to write this letter.
I kindly therefore request you to please listen to music at low volume particulary after 10 pm. This will help to get a proper sleep at night and allow me to work with full attention.
I hope you will understand my problem and implement my suggested solution.
Yours faithfully,
Manish Thakur.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The response successfully covers all bullet points required by the task prompt. You clearly describe the situation in the opening sentence, 'I am writing to inform about the noise problem I am facing because of you.' You explain why it is a problem by mentioning how the high-volume music impacts your sleep and work focus, especially on Mondays. Furthermore, you suggest a practical solution by asking them to keep the music at a low volume after 10 pm. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a neighbour, maintaining clarity and purpose throughout. All parts of the task are well-addressed, fulfilling the Band 7 criteria.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The letter exhibits a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Ideas are logically grouped into paragraphs, starting with the purpose of the letter, followed by the impact on your daily routine, and concluding with a clear request for action. Cohesive devices such as 'Although', 'Due to this', and 'That is why' are used effectively to connect ideas, though referencing is occasionally slightly repetitive. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, contributing to an easy flow of information that aligns well with the Band 7 descriptors.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate and functional range of vocabulary suitable for a semi-formal or formal complaint letter. Phrases like 'organize party', 'proper sleep', and 'full attention' communicate your meaning clearly. However, there are a few word choice and collocation inaccuracies, such as 'inform about' instead of 'inform you about', and 'particulary' which is a spelling error. You attempt some less common lexical items, but the overall range remains somewhat standard, placing your lexical performance firmly within Band 6.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The letter displays a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as the concessive clause 'Although I do not have an issue with your parties, the high-volume music makes me uncomfortable.' You demonstrate control over basic grammar, but there are noticeable errors that occur, such as the missing pronoun in 'inform about the noise problem', the omission of an article in 'organize party at your place', and an unnecessary apostrophe in 'Mondays''. While these errors do not impede communication, they prevent the grammar score from reaching a higher band, making Band 6 an accurate assessment.
