Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Neighbour,
I am writing to mention the discomfort regarding the frequent noise from your apartment.
I am Karthik Yedukondala, living beneath your flat in the same apartment. I think both of our flats were designed the same. Your music system is exactly above my bedroom location. As a result, it is very difficult to me to get a quite peaceful sleep.
Moreover, my work demands me to be awake in odd timings. Unfortunately, the sound from your room is very high and disturbs my quality sleep. Not only that, last week due to the vibration one of my glass cup was fallen down from the rack. In addition, the noise is playing till midnight which makes my day weak due to lack of sleep and effects my productivity in work.
I would appreciate it if you could lower the volume during the night. Also please discontinue or adjust the bass modified sound system as well.
I hope we resolved the issue successfully.
Thank you,
Karthik Yedukondala.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The response addresses all parts of the task well, providing a clear description of the situation, explaining the impact on the writer, and suggesting a practical solution. The purpose of the letter is clear throughout, and the tone is appropriate for a formal complaint to a neighbour. The ideas are extended and supported, such as detailing how the music system is located directly above the bedroom and explaining the consequences on the writer's work productivity and sleep. However, there is a slight tendency to over-generalise or lean on everyday explanations rather than fully refined extensions in certain parts, which keeps the response fitting securely at this level. To move further up, the student could extend the description of the impact with even more specific nuances about the disturbances.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The letter demonstrates a clear overall arrangement with a logical progression of ideas from the introduction of the problem to the explanation of its effects, followed by a suggested solution and closing. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different points, such as the physical disturbance versus the scheduling and vibration issues. Cohesive devices are employed adequately, with transition words like 'Moreover', 'Not only that', and 'In addition' linking the sentences and paragraphs together. However, some referencing is slightly mechanical or repetitive, and a few cohesive links feel a bit forced rather than naturally integrated. To achieve a higher band, the student should aim for more fluid and varied transitions that weave the paragraphs together with greater subtlety and precision.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items and phrasing such as 'work demands me to be awake', 'productivity in work', and 'bass modified sound system'. There are some word choice and collocation errors that do not impede communication, such as writing 'quite peaceful sleep' instead of 'quiet peaceful sleep', 'odd timings' instead of 'odd hours', and stating that a glass cup 'was fallen down' rather than simply 'fell down'. Spelling and word formation are generally accurate enough to ensure the message is clear, but occasional inaccuracies reveal a limited precision. To reach the next band, the student needs to demonstrate a more precise control of collocations and a wider, more natural variety of sophisticated vocabulary.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The response displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing relative clauses and compound sentences effectively, as seen in structures like 'I would appreciate it if you could lower the volume during the night.' There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, but they rarely impede communication. Examples include preposition and article issues, such as 'difficult to me' instead of 'difficult for me', 'in work' instead of 'at work', and the minor awkwardness in 'I hope we resolved the issue successfully' where a present or future tense would be more accurate. The punctuation is mostly sound, and simple sentences are generally error-free. To advance, the student should incorporate a wider variety of complex grammatical structures with a higher frequency of error-free sentences.
