Dear _________,
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Neha,
I am writing to discuss about the frequent noise coming from your apartment.
The construction workers at your apartment create a lot of disturbance while working, they talk loudly and use the drilling machine frequently during the day creating an unpleasant environment. Since the building is small, the noise echoes in the entire building.
It is problematic for me since my IELTS exam is coming up this week for which I have been preparing for some time now. The noise makes it difficult for me to concentrate on studying. I am also juggling between college classes and my exam due to which this week is crucial for me.
I would request you to ask the workers to talk in a lower tone and use the drilling machine for two hours per day for this week, so that it doesn't disrupt both of our routines. I would appreciate your cooperation in this matter.
Yours truly,
Shreya

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5
You successfully cover all bullet points required by the task prompt. You clearly describe the situation regarding the construction work and noise coming from the upstairs apartment, explain the personal problem this creates with your upcoming IELTS exam and college classes, and suggest a practical solution involving limited hours for the drilling. The tone is appropriate for a semi-formal letter to a neighbour. Your ideas are well-extended and clearly supported throughout the response. To reach a higher level, you could provide even more precise nuance in describing the impact of the disturbance, moving beyond general statements to fully flesh out the communicative effect without any tendency to over-generalise.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.5
Your letter demonstrates a clear logical organisation and progression from opening to conclusion. You use paragraphing effectively, with each paragraph serving a distinct communicative purpose: introducing the issue, describing the details, explaining the personal impact, and proposing a polite solution. Cohesive devices such as 'Since' and 'due to which' are used appropriately to link ideas, although referencing could be slightly more seamless. To achieve an even higher standard, you could ensure that every transition flows with greater subtlety and variation, avoiding any mechanical feel in how sentences and paragraphs are connected.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully incorporating less common lexical items and phrases such as 'unpleasant environment', 'juggling between', and 'disrupt both of our routines'. Your word choice is generally clear and communicates your message effectively. However, there is a minor lexical collocation slip in the opening sentence ('discuss about'), where the preposition is unnecessary after 'discuss'. To reach the next band, you should aim for a wider range of sophisticated vocabulary and completely eliminate minor word choice inaccuracies while showing greater stylistic flexibility.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
You successfully utilise a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating good control over structures such as subordinate clauses ('Since the building is small, the noise echoes...') and participial phrases. Grammar and punctuation are generally well-managed, and errors do not impede communication. However, there is a run-on sentence structure in the second paragraph ('...working, they talk loudly...'), where a comma splice occurs. To attain a higher band, you would need to produce a higher proportion of error-free complex sentences with flawless punctuation control across the entire response.
