Dear _________,
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Mrs. Rose,
I hope this letter reaches you in a good health. I am writing this letter to request humbly not to make a lot of noise especially after 10 pm at night. I am your neighbour Patsy William living exactly to your down floor.
Since, I moved here two months back, there is continuous loud speaker noise coming from your house mainly after 10 pm. As I have to catch a train early every morning I have to hit the hay by around 9:30 pm but that loud noise of songs and dance foot steps wake me up in the middle of the night.
It bothers me a lot because I am unable to concentrate on my meditation before the bed as well as my aunt is also living with me and she is in her 80's. So, please hold your horses at night taht people can end their day with a good sleep.
On of the main solution is to lower down speaker volume and choose different time of your day to for recreational activities and enjoyment.
Kindly, respect others boundaries and I hope from now onwards it will not happen.
Thank you,
Sincerely,
Patsy

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response successfully addresses all parts of the prompt, covering the description of the situation, the impact it has on the writer, and a clear suggestion for a solution. The purpose of the letter is immediately apparent, and the tone remains generally appropriate for a complaint to a neighbour, maintaining a polite greeting and sign-off. However, while all three bullet points are covered, some ideas show a tendency to be slightly under-developed rather than fully extended throughout. For instance, the explanation regarding the aunt in her 80s and the meditation is introduced but not fully integrated into a cohesive consequence. To reach the next level, the ideas need to be more fully elaborated with richer supporting details and a more consistent register.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The letter demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement with a clear purpose and logical progression from describing the noise issue to explaining its effects and finally proposing a solution. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct points, such as the introduction of the problem, the specific consequences, and the requested remedy. Cohesive devices are employed, but some referencing and linking mechanisms feel slightly mechanical or repetitive, such as the frequent use of 'so' and 'because' to connect clauses. While the organisation is clear and easy to follow, achieving a higher band would require smoother, more flexible transitions between sentences and paragraphs, along with more sophisticated referencing to guide the reader seamlessly through the argument.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for the task, attempting some less common phrases such as 'hit the hay' and 'hold your horses'. However, these idioms feel slightly too colloquial and inappropriate for a formal or semi-formal written complaint to a neighbour. Furthermore, there are noticeable word choice and collocation inaccuracies, such as 'good health' instead of 'good health', 'living exactly to your down floor' instead of 'living directly below you', and 'lower down speaker volume' instead of 'turn down the volume'. Spelling is generally acceptable, but these lexical errors and awkward collocations cause some minor distraction for the reader. Expanding the range with more precise, natural phrasing and avoiding inappropriate idioms will greatly strengthen this area.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The writing demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, effectively conveying the intended message despite several grammatical lapses. There are errors in prepositions and articles, such as 'in a good health', 'to your down floor', and 'On of the main solution'. Additionally, punctuation and sentence structure show occasional awkwardness, including the run-on structure in 'taht people can end their day with a good sleep' which also contains a spelling error ('taht'). These errors are typical of a mixed-structure band where errors persist but rarely impede overall communication. To achieve a higher score, the writer needs to produce a greater frequency of error-free complex sentences and demonstrate tighter control over prepositions, subject-verb agreement, and articles.
