Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt by describing the situation regarding the noise, explaining how it impacts sleep and children's education, and suggesting a practical solution to lower the volume. However, the ideas are somewhat under-developed, and the tone fluctuates slightly. Furthermore, an important penalty applies here because the length requirement of 150 words was not met, as the response falls slightly short at 144 words. To reach a higher band, you should expand more fully on the impact of the noise and ensure you meet the minimum word count requirement consistently.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The letter maintains a coherent overall arrangement and follows a clear format appropriate for a semi-formal or personal letter to a neighbour. However, the cohesion between sentences is sometimes mechanical or abrupt, and referencing is occasionally unclear, such as in transitions like 'However, certain day times...'. Paragraphing is attempted, but ideas run together within single blocks rather than being separated into distinct functional paragraphs for the situation, the impact, and the solution. To improve, you should use a wider variety of cohesive devices more naturally and organise your writing into clearer, distinct paragraphs to help the reader follow your points smoothly.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully communicating the basic message about the noise issue. However, there are numerous spelling, word-choice, and word-form errors that detract from the writing. Examples include 'unconfortable', 'writting', 'splet', 'childern', 'progess', 'request', 'low' used as a verb instead of 'lower', and 'appricate'. These errors do not completely impede communication, but they reflect a limited range and noticeable inaccuracy. To achieve a higher band, you need to expand your range of vocabulary, use less common lexical items accurately, and carefully check your spelling and word forms before finishing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The writing demonstrates a mix of simple and some complex sentence forms, such as conditional and subordinate clauses like 'if could you please low your music volume'. There are frequent errors in grammar, punctuation, and sentence structure, including missing articles ('wake up tried'), tense issues ('will finds this letter well', 'is raise'), and awkward syntactic patterns. Punctuation is also inconsistent, with missing capitalisation at the start of sentences and incorrect spacing around commas and full stops. While these errors rarely completely impede communication, they are frequent enough to hold the score at this level. To improve, focus on mastering basic sentence structures, correct verb tenses, and careful punctuation.
