Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Mr. Smith,

The intention of my email today is to express my concern regarding an annoying, intolerable and extensively disturbing noise occurring from your resident.

Owing to my early morning work schedule, I always prefer to sleep early aroung 7:00 PM in the evening; however, a continueous irritating sound of music from your apartment makes it challanging for me to sleep peacefully.

Although I can adjust my sleeping hours, a frequent adjustments would potentially affect my overall health eventually. By the same token, Having an insufficient sleep would result in intrupted work ethics.

When it comes to the resolution, I recommend playing music before 7:00 PM which would not only be convenient to you but would also realistically work for me. Additionally, I would request to lower the volume level in order to keep the environment peaceful.

I genuinely appreciate your time and attention to this matter; looking forward to hearing from you.

Sincerely,

Tejas Zala

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

You successfully address all three key bullet points of the task by describing the situation, explaining the problem it causes, and offering a practical solution. Your tone is appropriately polite yet direct. Your position is clear throughout the letter. For instance, you clearly detail the disturbance by mentioning the 'continuous irritating sound of music' and effectively explain how it impacts your sleep and work ethics. While your ideas are relevant and supported, some aspects tend to over-generalize or could be expanded further with additional specific details about the frequency or timing of the noise. To move toward higher levels, you could ensure that every idea is fully elaborated with even more nuanced support and seamless integration of task requirements.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

Your letter demonstrates a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. You manage paragraphing well, dedicating distinct paragraphs to the introduction, the problem, its impact, the proposed resolution, and the sign-off. You use cohesive devices adequately, such as 'however', 'although', and 'additionally', which helps guide the reader smoothly through your arguments. However, there is a slight mechanical feel to some of your transitions, and referencing could be slightly tighter in places. To achieve a higher level of cohesion, you could work on making cohesive devices completely unobtrusive and ensure that paragraph transitions flow even more naturally without relying on formulaic transition markers.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common lexical items such as 'intolerable', 'extensively disturbing', and 'resolution' with general success. However, there are some noticeable word choice and spelling errors, such as 'resident' instead of 'residence', 'aroung' instead of 'around', 'continueous' instead of 'continuous', 'challanging' instead of 'challenging', 'intrupted' instead of 'interrupted', and 'ethics' where 'performance' or 'productivity' would be a more precise collocation. These minor slips and occasional inaccuracies in word choice prevent the vocabulary from reaching a higher standard. To improve, focus on mastering natural collocations and carefully proofreading your spelling.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, incorporating clauses with 'owing to', 'although', and relative clauses effectively. There are some errors in grammar and punctuation present throughout the text, such as 'occurring from your resident' (preposition and form issues), 'a frequent adjustments' (article error with a plural noun), and 'Having an insufficient sleep would result' (unnecessary capitalization and gerund phrasing). Additionally, a comma splice occurs in your final sentence before 'looking forward'. Despite these errors, they rarely impede communication and your meaning remains clear. To reach the next level, you should aim for a higher frequency of error-free complex sentences and refine your control over articles and prepositions.
