Student answer (Band 7.5)
Dear Prachi,
I hope you are doing well. I am writing to kindly request your cooperation regarding the noise coming from your apartment. Recently I have noticed that you often play music through your speakers at a very high volume especially during the evening and sometimes at night.
The noise has become quite difficult for us because my grandmother has come to stay with us for a month. She is elderly and has some minor health issues. The loud music sometimes scares her and makes it difficult for her to sleep peacefully both during the day and at night. As we live in a small apartment building the sound travels easily between the apartments.
I would really appreciate it if you could lower the volume especially during the evening and night. ALso if you can please keep your doors and windows closed while using the speakers as this may help reduce the noise.
Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.
Yours sincerely,
Dhruvi

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 8.0
The response covers all parts of the task exceptionally well, earning a high score for fully satisfying the prompt requirements. You successfully described the situation by mentioning that your neighbour plays music through speakers at a high volume, particularly in the evening and at night. You clearly explained why this is a problem, noting that your elderly grandmother is staying with you for a month, has health issues, and is frightened by the loud noise, which disrupts her sleep. Finally, you provided a practical and polite solution by asking her to lower the volume and keep doors and windows closed. All three bullet points are well-developed and supported with relevant details, creating a natural, communicative letter with an appropriate tone for addressing a neighbour.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 8.0
Ideas are logically sequenced and the letter demonstrates a clear progression from introduction to problem description, impact, and solution. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, with each paragraph serving a distinct purpose in structuring the correspondence. Cohesive devices are managed well without feeling mechanical, and referencing between sentences is clear and natural. For instance, transitioning smoothly from introducing the problem in the first paragraph to explaining the personal impact in the second paragraph shows strong organizational control. The letter flows seamlessly from start to finish, maintaining an appropriate epistolary structure including the correct opening and sign-off.
Lexical Resource: Band 7.0
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary with some flexibility and precision, allowing you to communicate your message effectively. Phrases like 'kindly request your cooperation', 'elderly and has some minor health issues', and 'sleep peacefully' show a good grasp of everyday communicative English suited to a polite semi-formal letter. There are occasional slight inaccuracies or missed opportunities for more sophisticated collocation, such as capitalizing 'ALso' in the third paragraph, but overall the vocabulary is adequate and clear. To reach a higher band, you could incorporate less common lexical items and idiomatic phrases, ensuring complete accuracy in spelling and capitalization.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.0
The writing contains a good mix of simple and complex sentence forms, with frequent error-free sentences demonstrating a solid command of grammar and punctuation. Structures such as 'I am writing to kindly request your cooperation regarding...' and 'I would really appreciate it if you could lower the volume...' are handled accurately. There are a few minor punctuation slips, such as missing commas in introductory clauses (e.g., 'Recently I have noticed' and 'As we live in a small apartment building'), but these errors rarely impede communication and do not obscure the meaning. Your control of verb tenses and clause structures remains generally consistent throughout the response.
