Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sean,

I hope you are doing well. I am writing to inform you about loud noises coming from your appartment during the night time. I believe it's your son watching television on high volume.

Since, my wife and I work full time jobs and have a morning shifts we go to bed early. But the loud noises that come from your house disrupts our sleep. Also, our children are not able to sleep at night because of it and wake up late for school.

Though, i would like to propose an idea so that no one gets disturbed. In my opinion, you can buy your son headphones which he can wear while watching the shows. This way it is convenient for both him and us. He can enjoy the T.v while me and my family can get a decent amount of sleep and wake up fresh the next day.

Yours Sincerely,

Rudresh

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5

You successfully address all three bullet points required in the task instructions. You clearly describe the situation by informing Sean about the loud noises coming from his apartment during the night and identifying the likely source as his son watching television. You then explain why it is a problem by highlighting that you and your wife have full-time jobs and morning shifts, making early sleep essential, and note that your children are also affected and wake up late for school. Finally, you suggest a practical solution by recommending that he buy his son headphones. All parts are well-covered with relevant ideas, though the explanation of the impact on your children could be slightly more extended to reach the highest standard. The tone is appropriately polite and well-suited for a neighbourly letter.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

Your letter demonstrates a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. You begin with an appropriate friendly opening, follow a logical paragraph structure where each paragraph handles a distinct purpose (the problem, the impact, the solution), and conclude with an appropriate sign-off. You make effective use of cohesive devices and referencing, such as using 'This way' to link your proposed solution back to the benefits for both parties. The overall progression is smooth and easy to follow, and the formatting is well-suited to a standard personal letter, meeting all the requirements for this level of cohesion.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully communicating your message with common terms and attempting some less common phrases like 'full time jobs', 'morning shifts', and 'decent amount of sleep'. However, there are a few spelling and word-choice inaccuracies, such as misspelling 'apartment' as 'appartment', and an awkward collocation in 'high volume' (instead of 'at high volume'). Additionally, phrases like 'watching the shows' could be more precise. These lexical errors do not impede communication, but they keep your vocabulary score at an adequate, competent level rather than a more advanced one.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You display a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, successfully using subordinate clauses such as 'I am writing to inform you about...' and 'Since, my wife and I work full time jobs...'. There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, such as an unnecessary comma after 'Since,' and a lowercase 'i' in 'Though, i would like to propose...'. You also miss an article in 'have a morning shifts' (should be 'have morning shifts' or 'have a morning shift'). However, these errors are relatively minor and rarely impede communication, demonstrating a solid control over basic sentence structures while attempting some complexity.
