Dear _________,
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Mr John,
I am writing to express my profound concern regarding the noise that usually comes from your apartment, and it bothers us a lot.
To elaborate further, my children are small, and they have to wake up early in the morning in order to go to school. Late at night, due to excessive noise, they cannot sleep properly. On top of it, my wife and I are both working professionals, and we also have to wake up early and work. The issue that we are facing regularly creates frustration and reduces focus on our work.
We cannot focus efficiently on our work as it is being impacted due to lack of sleep, and we cannot show enough productivity nowadays. In addition to that, children cannot focus on their studies, and recently, I got a complaint from their school teacher that children were sleeping during breaks and could not focus on the lecture properly, and their grades are deteriorating.
I would like to request that you please follow the quiet zone policy at night so that other people are not impacted. I hope you will understand our situation and take prompt action accordingly.
Kind regards,
Abhishek Chawla

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5
The response successfully covers all parts of the task by describing the noise situation in the apartment building, explaining the negative impacts on the family and children, and suggesting a practical solution regarding night-time quiet policies. The tone is appropriate for a semi-formal letter to a neighbour. The ideas are generally well-selected and relevant, fulfilling the lower band requirements comfortably. However, to push toward a higher descriptor level, some ideas could be extended with more specific detail rather than repeating similar points about work and study focus across consecutive paragraphs. For instance, the mention of the school teacher's complaint is a strong, specific development, but the preceding paragraph's discussion on reduced work productivity overlaps heavily with subsequent sentences, showing a slight tendency to circle back on the same ideas rather than progressing continuously.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The letter maintains a coherent overall arrangement with a clear, logical progression from describing the problem to detailing its effects and finally offering a solution. Paragraphing is used sufficiently to separate the introduction, the body paragraphs covering the impacts, and the concluding request. Cohesive devices are employed, such as 'To elaborate further', 'On top of it', and 'In addition to that', which help structure the argument. However, some cohesive referencing and transitions feel a bit mechanical or repetitive, particularly the way sentences are linked with repeated mentions of focus and work. To achieve a higher level, the transitions between sentences could flow more naturally without relying as heavily on standard connective phrases, ensuring that the connection between the family's exhaustion and the school performance flows seamlessly without slight redundancy.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, demonstrating an acceptable range with appropriate terms such as 'profound concern', 'excessive noise', and 'deteriorating'. The writer attempts some less common lexical items and maintains a polite yet firm tone suited to a complaint letter. Communication is clear throughout, and the reader has no difficulty understanding the message. However, there are occasional lapses in word choice and slight stylistic heaviness, such as 'quiet zone policy' which sounds slightly institutional rather than natural for a residential neighbour dispute. To reach the next band, the writer would need to demonstrate a wider, more flexible range of uncommon lexical items with greater precision and stylistic naturalness, while avoiding repetitive phrasing around concepts of focus and work.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
The response displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating control over compound structures like 'my children are small, and they have to wake up early'. Punctuation and sentence boundaries are generally well-managed, and there are several error-free sentences that allow for smooth reading. However, there are some minor grammatical awkwardnesses and slight redundancies in clause structures, such as 'We cannot focus efficiently on our work as it is being impacted due to lack of sleep', where the phrasing is slightly clunky. These errors do not impede communication, which aligns well with the expected standard. To move further up, the writer should incorporate a wider variety of complex grammatical structures executed with greater frequency of error-free sentences and tighter syntactic control.
