Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Mr. Albert,

I am writing to let you know about unwanted sounds from your apartment. I would appreciate it if you could reduce the noise between 6 pm and 10 pm.

To begin with, I would like to mention that I am always disturbed by loud and sharp music from your apartment. The main reason for this is not only that my apartment is just beneath your place, but also that there is no soundproof wall.

Furthermore, I would like to mention that I am a student; from 6 pm to 10 pm, I try to focus on assessments and projects that demand an extreme level of focus. Therefore, due to loud and sharp music, I am unable to concentrate on academic work that why in semseter my grades was suffered. I would appreciate it if you could avoid music during this crucial time.

Finally, you can also play some soft music or turn down the volume of songs. I believe that you will understand my problem and cooperate with me. Please let me know if you require any further information.

Thank you for your time and consideration. I look forward to your prompt response.

Yours sincerely,

Amrit

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The response successfully addresses all parts of the prompt by describing the situation with the noise, explaining clearly why it is a problem for academic focus, and suggesting a practical solution involving volume reduction or soft music. A clear and appropriate tone for a semi-formal letter is maintained throughout. While the ideas are relevant and generally well-presented, certain aspects, such as the explanation of the impact on grades, show some tendency to over-generalize and could benefit from slightly deeper elaboration. Overall, the content fully meets the requirements for a complete and well-rounded response to the task.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter exhibits a clear logical organisation and progression from the introduction of the problem through to the conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different points, such as the nature of the noise and the specific impact on studies. Cohesive devices are employed to connect ideas, utilizing phrases like 'To begin with', 'Furthermore', and 'Finally'. However, referencing and transitions are at times slightly mechanical rather than entirely seamless, reflecting characteristics of the solid middle band while leaning towards better structural clarity.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

An adequate range of vocabulary is deployed for the task, allowing the writer to communicate the problem effectively. There are attempts to use less common expressions, such as 'extreme level of focus' and 'crucial time'. However, there are some minor lexical inaccuracies and spelling errors, such as 'semseter' instead of 'semester', and awkward phrasing like 'that why in semester my grades was suffered'. These errors do not impede communication, but they highlight the need for greater precision in word choice and spelling to reach a higher level.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

The writer demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, incorporating structures such as 'I would appreciate it if you could...' and 'The main reason for this is not only that... but also that...'. There is good control of basic grammar and punctuation, but some errors persist, particularly in clause structure and verb forms, as seen in 'academic work that why in semester my grades was suffered'. These errors rarely impede communication, and the presence of error-free sentences alongside minor slips places the grammar securely within the expected range.
