Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Robert,
I hope you are doing well. It's been ages since we caught up. I am writing to tell you about the noise that comes from your apartment at night time.
Whenever I come from my job in the evening, I then start gaining knowledge to upgrade my skills and learn something new but the frequent disturbance from your apartment couldn't let me focus.
Gaining new skills will help me to get promotion in my job and can also boost my salary and reputation. Moreover, it will benefit me to handle new projects, which will lead me to a successful life. The noise from your apartment is becoming a major problem for me.
As all day I am at my work , so at that time you can play music and enjoy your time which will not disturb me as I am not at home. My job schedule is till evening 7pm, so till then you can do whatever you want and after that I start studying and need a quiet time.
I hope you can understand my request and can reduce the noise so that I can focus on my skills
Yours lovingly,
Prabhnoor

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You successfully address all parts of the prompt by describing the situation regarding the noise coming from your upstairs neighbour at night, explaining why it is a problem for you in terms of your studying and career progression, and suggesting a practical solution by proposing specific times when music can be played instead. However, some ideas are more fully developed than others; for instance, the explanation of how the noise impacts you and your career goals is extended quite a bit, whereas the description of the situation itself is somewhat brief and generalized. To reach the next level, all bullet points should be equally well-expanded with precise details rather than relying on repetition.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
Your letter maintains a coherent overall arrangement and a clear purpose from the opening greeting to the closing sign-off. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'Moreover' and 'As all day I am at my work', though some referencing and transitions feel slightly mechanical or repetitive, such as repeatedly returning to the idea of gaining skills. Paragraphing is used to separate your introduction, the explanation of the problem, your proposed schedule, and the conclusion. To achieve a higher band, you could utilize a wider variety of sophisticated cohesive markers and ensure that your progression of ideas flows more seamlessly without circling back to the same points.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You demonstrate an adequate vocabulary range for the task, successfully attempting less common phrases such as 'career progression' implied through 'upgrade my skills' and 'reputation'. However, there are some noticeable inaccuracies in word choice and phrasing, such as writing 'gaining knowledge to upgrade my skills' instead of 'developing my skills', or using 'till evening 7pm' rather than 'until 7:00 PM'. These lexical slips do not impede communication, but they highlight a limited precision in word choice and collocation. To improve, aim to incorporate more precise, natural idioms and academic collocations while ensuring exact word forms.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You display a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing relative clauses and conditional structures such as 'which will not disturb me as I am not at home.' There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, including awkward phrasing like 'the frequent disturbance from your apartment couldn't let me focus' and minor punctuation omissions at the end of sentences. Fortunately, these errors rarely impede communication and the meaning remains clear throughout. To move further up, you should strive to produce a higher frequency of error-free complex sentences and exercise tighter control over prepositions and verb tense consistency.
