Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear John,

I am writting this letter regarding my concern about noise level which is coming frequently from your apartment. I am Daljit. My apartment number is 401.

I want to tell you that I have an exam in upcoming days. I was studying in my room but the noise coming from your apartment was really distracted me. I could not study in this level of noise. I tried to close all windows and doors properly but it still bothered me.

Moreover, My grandmother is not feeling well. She is suffering from heart disease. The noise is also bothering her.

Therefore, I would like to suggest you that please decrease the volume of music which you are listening daily and also please tell to your family members walk quietly around the upstairs then we cannot get disturb. I hope these suggestions would turn fruitful. An acknowledgment of the issue would really be appreciated, If you need any assistance from my side, I can be easily reached at [redacted phone].

Regards,

Daljit Kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The response successfully covers all parts of the prompt by describing the situation regarding the noise, explaining how it negatively impacts both your studying and your grandmother's health, and offering clear suggestions for a solution. A clear and appropriate tone is maintained throughout the letter. The ideas are extended and supported effectively, such as detailing the upcoming exam and the specific health concern of heart disease. To move towards a higher band, the response could provide even greater depth and nuance in the explanation of the impact and the proposed solutions, ensuring that every detail is thoroughly explored without over-generalising.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The letter demonstrates a clear logical organisation and progression from the introduction of the problem to the supporting details and finally the proposed solutions. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different points, such as the study issues versus the health concerns. Cohesive devices and referencing are generally managed well, as seen with transition words like 'Moreover' and 'Therefore', though occasionally cohesion can feel slightly mechanical. To achieve a higher level, the connections between paragraphs and sentences could be made even more seamless and unobtrusive.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, allowing you to convey your message clearly. You attempt some less common vocabulary items such as 'upcoming days' and 'acknowledgment', though there are some inaccuracies in word choice and phrasing, such as 'noise level which is coming frequently' and 'turn fruitful'. Spelling is generally accurate, but occasional awkward collocations prevent the vocabulary from reaching a higher standard. To improve, you should incorporate a wider range of precise, natural phrasing and collocation suited to a semi-formal letter.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

There is a mix of simple and complex sentence forms attempted throughout the letter. You demonstrate control over basic structures and punctuation, but there are noticeable errors in grammar and verb forms, such as 'I am writting' (spelling/morphology), 'was really distracted me', 'in this level of noise', and 'tell to your family members walk quietly'. These errors occasionally draw attention and show that while complex structures are attempted, they are not always fully controlled. To reach a higher standard, a greater proportion of error-free sentences and tighter control over prepositions and infinitive structures are needed.
