IELTS Writing Task 1 question

You live in a small apartment building. You are frequently bothered by noise from your upstairs neighbour's apartment.

Write a letter to your neighbour. In your letter
• describe the situation.
• explain why it is a problem for you.
• suggest a solution.

You do NOT need to write any addresses.

Begin your letter as follows:

Dear _________,

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Neighbour,

I hope you are doing well. I am writing to you to complain about consistent noise coming from your apartment, which cause me several problems.

My name is Parminder and I am your neighbour living right below your apartment. I am working in early morning shifts regularly on weekdays, as a result, I have to go to bed early for sleep. But due to continues noise from your music system disturb my sleep.

Due to this situation, I could not get enough sleep and feel less productive and fatigue during work. Additionally, I also could not focus on my part time studies and feel drowsy during online sessions.

I completely understand you want to listen music for late night, but I would really appreciate it if you could use headphones or turn down the volume of your music system, particularly after 10 pm. I hope we could solve this problem easily.

Thank you for your time and consideration. I look forward to your response.

Yours sincerely,

Parminder

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5

The letter addresses all three requirements clearly: you describe repeated music noise from the upstairs apartment, explain its effects on your sleep, work, and studies, and propose using headphones or lowering the volume after 10 p.m. The request is polite and appropriate for a neighbour, and the purpose remains clear throughout. The consequences are relevant and supported with specific details, such as early shifts and drowsiness during online sessions. To make the response more fully developed, clarify when the noise usually occurs or give a brief example of how often it disrupts your sleep. The proposed solution is practical, though you could also invite the neighbour to discuss another arrangement if needed.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The letter has a clear progression: it introduces the complaint, explains your circumstances and the impact, then makes a request and closes courteously. Paragraphing helps distinguish these stages, while connectors such as “as a result” and “Additionally” make the relationships between ideas easy to follow. The overall organisation is effective, although some linking feels slightly mechanical, and the opening paragraph could lead more smoothly into the explanation of your work schedule. The reference to “this situation” is understandable, but a more specific reference to the late-night noise would make the connection even clearer. Varying transitions and tightening the link between the noise and its effects would make the flow more natural.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the situation, including “consistent noise,” “productive,” “part time studies,” and “consideration.” These choices communicate the complaint and its effects clearly, and the polite wording suits a neighbour letter. Some word-choice and collocation errors, however, make parts sound unnatural: “continues noise” and “listen music for late night” do not express the intended meaning idiomatically. “Feel less productive and fatigue” also contains an inaccurate word form. Aim to learn common combinations such as “ongoing noise,” “listen to music late at night,” and “feel fatigued.” More precise phrasing would improve naturalness while preserving your clear, courteous tone.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The response includes both simple sentences and attempts at more complex structures, for example, “I am working in early morning shifts regularly on weekdays, as a result…” and “I would really appreciate it if you could…”. The meaning is generally clear, but some grammatical errors remain. In “which cause me several problems,” the verb should agree with “noise”; “due to continues noise… disturb my sleep” has an incomplete and incorrectly structured clause; and “I could not get enough sleep and feel…” shifts tense inconsistently. The sentence joining two independent clauses with “as a result” also needs clearer punctuation or restructuring. Check agreement, clause construction, and consistent past or present tense to improve accuracy.
