IELTS Writing Task 1 question

You live in a small apartment building. You are frequently bothered by noise from your upstairs neighbour's apartment.

Write a letter to your neighbour. In your letter
• describe the situation.
• explain why it is a problem for you.
• suggest a solution.

You do NOT need to write any addresses.

Begin your letter as follows:

Dear _________,

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear John,

I hope you are doing great. I am writing to address an issue regarding noise coming from your apartment, particularly at night.

I have recently moved in and I am facing this issue for a week. A lot of noise has been coming from your apartment, which is disturbing my family. In addition, I have an exam coming up and I am preparing for it. I cannot study in chaos. It would be nice of you if you would consider my request.

I think most of the time your friends come at your place, and they play loud music and watch TV at high volume. Therefore, this diverts my attention and makes it difficult for me to concentrate on my studies. It would be a great favor if you would ask your friends to keep the volume of the music and TV low.

I hope you will consider my request.

Best regards.

Zubair.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The letter addresses all three required points: it describes nighttime noise, explains its effect on your family and exam preparation, and asks your neighbour to reduce the volume when friends visit. The request is clear and appropriately polite, especially in “It would be a great favor if you would ask your friends…” The explanation that the noise disrupts concentration supports your concern, although the description of the situation and the proposed solution could be developed more specifically—for example, by identifying particular quiet hours or suggesting a direct conversation if the problem continues. Overall, the purpose is clear and the ideas are relevant and supported, but some details remain general rather than fully elaborated.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter has a clear overall structure: an opening that states the purpose, paragraphs explaining the disturbance and its impact, a request, and a polite closing. Connectors such as “In addition” and “Therefore” help show how the ideas relate. However, the progression is not always smooth: the paragraph beginning “I think most of the time…” introduces a possible cause after the impact has already been explained, and “I hope you will consider my request” repeats an earlier polite appeal. The reference to “this” in “this diverts my attention” is understandable but could point more precisely to the loud music and television. More deliberate sequencing and less repetition would make the cohesion more flexible and natural.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The vocabulary is sufficient to communicate the situation and maintain a polite tone, with useful phrases such as “address an issue,” “disturbing my family,” and “consider my request.” However, several choices are awkward or imprecise, which limits the naturalness and flexibility of the language. “I am facing this issue for a week” is not an idiomatic way to describe a problem that began recently, while “I cannot study in chaos” sounds overly dramatic and imprecise in this context. “Come at your place” is also an unnatural collocation. Aim for more precise expressions for noise and its effects, and check that common word combinations sound natural in a neighbourly letter.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, including “I have an exam coming up and I am preparing for it” and the conditional request “It would be a great favor if you would ask your friends…”. Most sentences are easy to understand, and punctuation generally supports the meaning. Some grammatical patterns need closer control. In “I am facing this issue for a week,” the present perfect continuous would be more suitable with a duration continuing to the present. The phrase “if you would consider my request” also uses an awkward conditional construction; “if you could consider my request” is more appropriate. These issues do not prevent understanding, but more accurate tense and conditional choices would strengthen the writing.
