Dear _________,

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Mr Smith,

I hope you are in great health. I am writing to complain you about the frequent noise coming from upstairs neighbour's apartment since the day we have moved in this apartment.

The situation got worse in the night, when started playing loud music and the sound coming to our apartment. Besides this, in the middle of the night, we heared sounds like moving heavy furnitures from living room to bedroom everyday.

This regular noise distrub our lives significantly. My children could not focus on thier studies due to loud music and suddenly waked-up in the middle of the night because of the furniture movements. This not only affects our children's performance in the school but also reduced my productivity on my job.

I would appreciate if you could send them a warning letter from your side and request them to stop playing loud music on week days and discuss about the matter of regular furniture movement.

I hope you consider my request.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The letter addresses all three required points: it describes loud music and furniture being moved at night, explains the effects on your children and work, and asks for intervention. The impact is made specific through details such as the children waking suddenly and struggling to study. The request for a warning and for the neighbours to stop playing loud music on weekdays is clear. However, the proposed solution to the furniture noise—“discuss about the matter”—is less precise, and the letter does not directly ask the neighbour to speak with the residents or agree on quieter hours. Developing that request would make the solution as fully clear as the description and explanation already are. The purpose and tone remain appropriate for a neighbourly complaint, though the opening could be more natural and direct.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The information follows a sensible order: you introduce the complaint, describe the nighttime noise, explain its consequences, and then make a request. Separate paragraphs help the reader distinguish these stages, and links such as “Besides this” and “This not only… but also…” show how details relate. The progression is clear overall, but some connections are mechanical or imprecise. For example, “Besides this” introduces another noise example without clearly distinguishing it from the music, while “This regular noise” refers broadly to both. The final request also combines two actions in one sentence, making the solution slightly harder to follow. Use clearer references and give each requested action its own sentence to make the cohesion more flexible and precise.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use enough vocabulary to communicate the complaint and its effects, including “frequent noise,” “loud music,” “productivity,” and “performance.” These choices make the situation understandable, and “furniture movements” conveys the second source of disturbance. However, several noticeable spelling and word-choice or collocation errors reduce precision: “heared,” “distrub,” and “thier” are misspelled, while “complain you” and “send them a warning letter from your side” are not natural expressions in this context. “Furniture movement” is also less idiomatic than describing furniture being moved. Build accuracy with common letter-writing phrases and check spelling; a few more precise terms for noise and its effects would add flexibility without making the tone overly formal.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The letter includes both simple statements and attempts at more complex structures, such as “This not only affects… but also reduced…” and the sentence explaining the effect on your children. The overall meaning is generally clear, but some sentence structures and verb forms are inaccurate. In “when started playing loud music,” the subject is missing; “the sound coming to our apartment” is not a complete clause. Tense and agreement are inconsistent in “could not focus… and suddenly waked-up” and “affects… but also reduced.” There are also errors in patterns such as “since the day we have moved in this apartment” and “I would appreciate if.” Aim for complete clauses, consistent past or present tense, and accurate verb patterns. These corrections would improve control while preserving the range you are attempting.
