IELTS Writing Task 1 question
You live in a small apartment building. You are frequently bothered by noise from your upstairs neighbour's apartment.
Write a letter to your neighbour. In your letter
• describe the situation.
• explain why it is a problem for you.
• suggest a solution. You do NOT need to write any addresses.
Begin your letter as follows:
Dear _________,
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Sir or Madam,
The purpose of my writing today is to inform you about the noise coming from your unit, most often in the evenings and at night.
I have noticed that the sound of the music is too loud, heavy footsteps, and some people talk loudly at night. These kinds of noise disturb my sleep.
Usually, I work during the daytime, and I have to study for my higher in the evening or sometimes at night, so I need a quiet space to focus on my education. However, the sounds make my whole study time worse than ever.
I would be truly grateful if you could lower the volume of the music and walk gently on the floor, especially after 10 p.m. I can completely understand that you want to spend your leisure time with your friends and enjoy music, but a little consideration makes a huge difference.
Thank you so much for your consideration in advance. Hopefully, you will understand my issue and try to cooperate in this matter.
Yours faithfully,
Kevin Gohil

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5
The letter clearly addresses all three requirements: it describes evening and nighttime noise, explains its effects on your sleep and study, and asks the neighbour to reduce the music and walk more quietly after 10 p.m. The explanation that you work during the day and study in the evening gives the request a clear personal context, while acknowledging the neighbour’s wish to enjoy time with friends keeps the tone considerate. The purpose and requested action remain clear throughout. To develop the ideas further, specify how often the disturbance occurs or give a brief example of its impact; this would make the situation more fully supported rather than relying on general descriptions.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The letter follows a clear progression: you introduce the noise, explain its effect, make a practical request, and close politely. Paragraphing separates these functions effectively, and linking expressions such as “However” and “so” help show relationships between ideas. The contrast in “I can completely understand…” also supports a tactful, logical appeal. Cohesion is generally clear, though some connections are quite straightforward and the opening and closing formulae are somewhat formal for a neighbour. You could make the flow more natural by linking the examples of noise directly to their consequences and varying transitions, while retaining the clear paragraph structure.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
You use an adequate range for this letter, including relevant phrases such as “disturb my sleep,” “quiet space to focus,” and “a little consideration makes a huge difference.” These choices communicate the problem and maintain a courteous tone. There are also some imprecise or unnatural collocations: “the sound of the music is too loud, heavy footsteps” does not form a parallel list, and “my higher” is unclear in “study for my higher.” “Makes my whole study time worse than ever” is understandable but not idiomatic. This mix of effective task vocabulary and noticeable word-choice issues fits the current level. Aim for more precise, natural phrases such as “loud music and heavy footsteps” and “prepare for my higher-level studies.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.0
The letter includes a useful mix of simple and complex sentences, and many are accurate, including “These kinds of noise disturb my sleep” and the conditional request beginning “I would be truly grateful if you could…”. The sentence explaining your work and study routine also attempts to connect several ideas with “and” and “so.” However, the list in “the sound of the music is too loud, heavy footsteps, and some people talk loudly” is not grammatically parallel: it combines a clause with noun phrases. The phrase “study for my higher” also leaves the object incomplete. Most meaning remains clear, and punctuation is generally controlled. Build accuracy by keeping list items in the same grammatical form and checking that each phrase has a complete, clear structure.
