Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Mr. Brown,

I hope this letter finds you well. I am writing to bring to attention a problem that has ben occurring due to frequent noises coming from your apartment.

From the last couple of weeks, I have noticed unusual noises from the upper floor. Upon investigating properly, I found out that these noises are coming out of your apartment because of the loud music and late night parties. This situation is posing disturbance in the building including me.

The main problem that has occurred due to this issue is that it has disturbed my whole sleep-cycle. I work in a cooperative work from home job that starts from 9 p.m. Late night parties and loud music had made difficult for me to focus on my work and be productive as I can not listen to important calls audibly, hence, missing out crucial information during the meetings. This also has disturbed my mental health well-being that is impacting me negatively.

Given the nature of the problem, I would like to suggest a solution to this. I would be helpful if the music volume could turned down to a point where it is only audible in your apartment. This will ensure that other people are not getting offended by the loud noise. In addition, it could be better if you can do your parties in a time frame that ends by midnight keeping in mind that others sleep do not get disturbed.

I look forward to a satisfactory resolution to this matter.

Yours sincerely,

Ramandeep Kaur.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 8.0

The letter covers all three required points clearly: it describes the late-night music and parties, explains their effects on your sleep and work, and proposes both lowering the volume and ending parties by midnight. The impact is developed with specific details, such as difficulty hearing important calls and missing information in meetings, which makes the complaint persuasive. The tone remains appropriately polite and focused on resolving the issue. To make the response even more complete, clarify the timing or frequency of the noise—for example, how often it occurs or how late it usually continues. This would add a little more precision to an otherwise well-developed account.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The letter follows a clear progression from introducing the problem, to explaining its effects, and then offering solutions. Paragraphing supports this structure, and phrases such as “The main problem” and “Given the nature of the problem” help signal the movement between points. The closing is also suitable for a neighbourly complaint. Some linking is slightly mechanical, however, particularly the repeated use of “This” and “In addition.” The sentence beginning “This situation is posing disturbance” also makes the connection between the noise and its effect less smooth than it could be. Use more precise references and vary transitions so that the relationships between ideas feel more natural.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

You use a suitable range of vocabulary for a formal complaint, including “frequent noises,” “focus on my work,” “productive,” and “satisfactory resolution.” These choices communicate the issue and its consequences clearly, and the tone is generally appropriate. Some less natural collocations and word forms limit precision: “posing disturbance,” “sleep-cycle,” “mental health well-being,” and “getting offended by the loud noise” do not express the intended meaning as naturally as they could. There is also a spelling error in “ben.” Aim for more idiomatic combinations and check spelling; this would make your vocabulary more flexible and accurate while preserving the clear message.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

The response includes a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including clauses introduced by “because,” “that,” and “where,” and most meaning remains clear. Some grammatical errors occur in verb forms, articles, and sentence construction. For example, “it would be helpful if the music volume could turned down” needs a passive form (“could be turned down”), while “had made difficult for me” is missing an object structure such as “had made it difficult.” In “others sleep do not get disturbed,” the clause needs restructuring, and “I work in a cooperative work from home job” is grammatically awkward. Review passive constructions, articles, and clause formation to improve accuracy and control.
