Dear _________,
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Mr. Shah,
I hope you are having a wonderful day, I am writing to bring to your attention a matter regarding noise problem that occurs from your apartment.
To provide some specific context, I noticed that you have started dance classes at your apartment and I am really happy for that.
Regarding the problem, since I have university exams next week, load music distracts my concentration while stuying. Additionally, I to go bed at around 10 PM, listening to the load music in the background makes me uncomfortable and it disturbs my sleeping cycle.
In light of these circumstances, I would suggest doing your music classes during day time or by lowering the music volume during night. Also, I would be grateful if you could take your children outside for playing cricket instead of playing inside the apartment.
I hope you will consider my request favourably, and I look forward to hearing from you.
Yours sincerely,
Anshu Patel.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The letter addresses all three requirements: you describe noise from music and children playing cricket, explain that it affects your exam preparation and sleep, and propose changes to the timing or volume. The polite request and closing also suit the purpose. The explanation of the music’s impact is clear, but the cricket issue appears suddenly and is not connected to the noise problem as fully; it would help to explain when the children play and how this affects you. The suggested solution is relevant, though “during day time” may not resolve the problem if the music is still loud. More precise, developed requests would make the response more complete and persuasive.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The message has a clear overall arrangement, moving from an opening, to the situation and its effects, and then to proposed solutions. Paragraphing helps the reader follow these stages, and phrases such as “Regarding the problem” and “In light of these circumstances” signal the progression. However, some linking feels formulaic, and the opening sentence joins two complete ideas with only a comma. The cricket request also shifts the focus without a transition explaining its connection to the noise complaint. You could improve the flow by grouping related noise examples together and using more natural links between the problem and each request.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range for a neighbourly complaint, including phrases such as “bring to your attention,” “distracts my concentration,” and “consider my request favourably.” The tone is generally polite and appropriate. Some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or awkward, however: “noise problem that occurs from” and “load music” do not express the intended meaning naturally, while “sleeping cycle” is less suitable than a phrase referring to sleep. There are also spelling errors in “stuying” and “load.” These do not prevent understanding, but more accurate collocations and careful proofreading would make the letter sound more fluent and precise.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The letter includes both simple sentences and more complex forms, such as the conditional request “I would be grateful if you could…” and the clause beginning “since I have university exams next week.” Meaning remains clear despite some grammatical errors. In the opening, two independent clauses are joined with a comma; separate them or use a conjunction. “I to go bed” is missing a finite verb and an article, and “lowering the music volume during night” needs a more accurate article or preposition pattern. The sentence about music and sleep also has an unclear structure. Reviewing sentence boundaries and basic verb and article patterns would improve accuracy while preserving your range.
