Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Mrs. Mehta,
I am writing this letter to complain about the noise that comes from your house every day in the evening.
Your husband plays music and practice his musical training very loudly in your balcony. Moreover, your dog also barks very loudly at every member of society whenever they try pass from your apartment.
After two days, my university exams are coming up. Due to continous noise from your apartment bothered me a lot and I could not concentrate on my studies. In addition, I am not able to come out of my house because of your dog.
I would like to give you some suggestions to improve situation. Firstly, you should tell your husband to play music at lower level for the next few days. Secondly, I would suggest you that for the next upcoming days you should put your dog at dog care take centre. Finally, You must train your dog to not bark at anybody who try to pass from your apartment.
I hope I am not causing you too much inconvenience and I would be happy if you look into this matter personally.
Waiting positive response from your side.
Best regards,
Hani Kathiriya.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The letter addresses all three required points: it describes evening music and the dog’s barking, explains that the noise disrupts exam preparation and makes it difficult to leave home, and proposes several actions. The purpose and your concern remain clear, and the suggestions are relevant to the situation. The explanation of the dog’s impact and the request for quieter music are supported by specific details, giving the response a clear, developed focus. To strengthen the letter further, make the requests more tactful and practical: for example, ask whether the music could be kept down during study hours and whether the dog could be managed near the balcony. This would retain your clear position while making the proposed solutions more considerate and persuasive.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The information follows a clear progression: you introduce the complaint, describe the sources of noise, explain their effects, and then offer solutions before closing. Paragraphing supports this sequence, and signposts such as “Moreover,” “In addition,” and “Firstly” help the reader follow the points. The suggestions are also presented in a logical order. Some linking is a little mechanical, particularly the repeated sequencing of “Firstly,” “Secondly,” and “Finally,” and the closing “Waiting positive response from your side” feels abrupt rather than smoothly connected to the polite request above it. For a more natural flow, vary the transitions and use a complete closing sentence, such as asking the neighbour to let you know whether the arrangements are possible.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use enough vocabulary to communicate the complaint and its effects, including “noise,” “barks,” “concentrate,” “suggestions,” and “inconvenience.” The wording is generally understandable, but several choices are inaccurate or unnatural, which limits precision and idiomatic control. For example, “musical training” is unclear in this context, “dog care take centre” is not a natural expression, and “look into this matter personally” sounds overly formal for a neighbourly request. There is also a spelling error in “continous.” Aim to learn common collocations and check spelling: “practise music,” “dog daycare centre,” and “continuous noise” would express your meaning more naturally. A wider range of precise, polite expressions would make the letter more effective.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The letter includes both simple statements and attempts at longer structures, such as “Due to…,” “whenever…,” and “because…,” so you are trying to vary sentence forms. However, errors occur often enough to affect fluency and sometimes make the reader pause. In “Your husband plays music and practice,” the verb does not agree with its subject; “Due to continous noise from your apartment bothered me” has an incomplete grammatical structure; and “I would suggest you that” uses an incorrect pattern. The final sentence, “Waiting positive response from your side,” is also a fragment. Practise complete clauses and common verb patterns: for example, “The continuous noise has bothered me” and “I would suggest that you…” would be grammatically sound. Check sentence boundaries and capitalisation as well.
