Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Luis,
I hope you are doing well. I am writing to you regarding the continous noise coming from your apartment for the several days which is causing me disturbance.
I am a student at the unversity and also working in the evenings to cover my expenses. I come around 10:00 pm to the apartment so that I can study and have some rest for few hours. Due to the loud music, especially during the midnight is creating distruption for me and unfortunately I am unable to concentrate on my things.
My exams are coming next week and I have to spend hours to prepare for it but noise is bothering me a lot. For the last two days, I was not able to sleep properly and during the day time I was feeling very much exhausted so I have to take off from my work. Then I came back home so that I can have some rest.
I would like to request to lower down the music volume and close the windows and doors so that I can not hear the noise. If it happens again then

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You address the three requested points: you describe loud music late at night, explain its effect on your studying, sleep, and work, and ask Luis to reduce the volume and close the windows and doors. The personal details make the problem understandable and relevant. However, the proposed solution is not fully developed, and the letter ends abruptly with “If it happens again then,” leaving the reader without a complete request or closing. To make the response more complete, finish this thought with a reasonable next step and add a polite sign-off. Some details, such as taking time off work, are relevant but could be linked more clearly to the noise’s consequences.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The letter has a generally clear progression: you introduce the noise, explain your circumstances and its effects, then make a request. Paragraphing helps separate these stages, and phrases such as “My exams are coming next week” signal a shift to the impact on your studies. Some connections are less smooth, however. The third paragraph repeats the effects of the noise without clearly showing how the events relate, and “Then I came back home” is difficult to connect to the preceding sentence. The final “If it happens again then” also leaves the sequence unfinished. Use clearer links between cause and consequence, and complete the final paragraph so the letter has a clear ending.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use enough vocabulary to communicate the situation and its effects, including “loud music,” “concentrate,” “exhausted,” and “lower down the music volume.” Some choices are understandable but unnatural or imprecise, such as “causing me disturbance,” “during the midnight,” and “concentrate on my things.” There are also spelling errors in “continous,” “unversity,” and “distruption,” which reduce accuracy. Aim for more natural collocations and check spelling carefully; for example, you could say the noise “is disturbing me,” occurs “around midnight,” and makes it difficult to “focus on my studies.” This would make your vocabulary more precise and fluent.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, and the main message is generally clear. However, some grammatical errors affect accuracy. In “Due to the loud music … is creating disruption,” the opening phrase does not connect correctly to the main clause; write, for example, “The loud music, especially around midnight, is disrupting my studies.” In “I have to spend hours to prepare for it,” the verb pattern should be “spend hours preparing for them.” There are also issues with articles and sentence construction in “for few hours” and “so that I can not hear the noise.” The unfinished final clause prevents a complete sentence. Review verb patterns, articles, and clause structure while continuing to use varied sentence forms.
