Dear _________,
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Sir,
I hope you are doing well. I am writing to enquire about an unpleasant sound from your apartment which is really effecting my daily routine and sleep cycle.
From the last couple of days, a loud noise which sounds like a drill machine is continuously coming from your apartment and it is causing a lot of trouble for my whole family. Due to which my children are unavailable to focus on their studies effecting their exams and assignments. Furthermore, we are facing sleep problems and I am unable to get proper nap time which is negatively impacting my office work.
Furthermore, this sound is irritating and I am getting frequent headaches due to its continuous exposure. I really want you to set a proper schedule and if you are renovating your apartment try to use these kinds of machines during day time so that we would be able to have proper sleep particularly at night.
I am not against this process but I would appreciate your efforts if you would alter the schedule to weekends or otherwise restrict it from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm which would be a big relief for my family. I would be very thankful to you if you consider my opinion.
Looking for your response,
Yours Sincerely.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 8.0
The letter covers all three requirements clearly: you describe a persistent drill-like noise, explain its effects on your children’s studies, your sleep and your work, and propose daytime hours or a weekend schedule. The tone is considerate rather than confrontational, especially in “I am not against this process,” which helps make the request appropriate for a neighbour. The reasons are specific and relevant, and the proposed time window gives the recipient a practical option. To make the response even more complete, clarify whether the noise occurs at night or at other particular times; the request to avoid night-time work suggests this, but the timing is not stated directly. Overall, the purpose and requested action are well communicated.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The message follows a clear progression: it opens with the reason for writing, describes the noise and its consequences, then makes a polite request and closes. Paragraphing separates the main stages effectively, and linking expressions such as “Furthermore” and “Due to which” help connect the points. However, “Furthermore” is used twice in close succession, making the transitions somewhat repetitive, and “Due to which” begins a fragment rather than linking smoothly to the preceding sentence. The final request also contains several alternatives in one long sentence, so the main proposal could be easier to follow if presented more directly. These are local issues within an otherwise logical and easy-to-understand letter.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of vocabulary to explain the situation and its impact, including “daily routine,” “sleep cycle,” “renovating,” and “continuous exposure.” The wording is generally understandable, and the polite expressions suit the purpose of a neighbourly letter. Some choices are inaccurate or unnatural, however: “effecting” should be “affecting” in this context, “unavailable to focus” is not a natural collocation, and “proper nap time” does not fit well when discussing sleep at night. “Drill machine” is also less idiomatic than “power drill.” Aim for precise, natural collocations rather than adding formal-sounding phrases. These improvements would make the message sound more fluent while preserving its clear meaning.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The letter includes a mix of simple and more complex structures, such as the conditional request “if you are renovating your apartment” and the sentence explaining how the noise affects your family. Meaning remains clear throughout, but some grammatical errors are present. “Due to which my children are unavailable to focus…” is a sentence fragment; connect it to the previous sentence or use a complete clause. In “I would appreciate your efforts if you would alter the schedule,” the conditional structure is awkward and would be clearer as “I would appreciate it if you could alter the schedule.” There are also punctuation and spacing slips, including extra spaces and the comma after “response” where a full stop would be more suitable. Review sentence boundaries and conditional forms.
