Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Mr.Oneil,
I hope you are doing well. I am writing to complain about the persistant noise that is coming from your apartment after 11:00 pm every night from last 5 days.
As my final year exams are going on, It is extremely a frustrating situation for me because It disrupt my study time. Whenever I tried to focus on my studies after 11:00 pm, the loud noises of music and family conversations started coming, which has caused me a great deal of inconvenience.
I experienced these loud noises earlier as well, but I never bothered to complain about because sometimes while spending quality time with families we are not aware about our sorroundings. Since I am going through my examination phase, it is really important for me to concentrate on my exams to achieve good grades. I would really appreciate it if you could understand my situation for next two weeks and lower the volume of music so that I could focus on my studies.
Thank you very much for your understanding.
Kind reg

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5
The letter addresses all three requirements: it describes late-night music and conversations, explains that these interrupt your exam preparation, and asks your neighbour to lower the music for the next two weeks. The request is clear and appropriately considerate, especially when you acknowledge that people may not notice the effect of their noise. The explanation is supported with relevant context about your final-year exams, so the purpose is easy to understand. To make the response more fully developed, specify a practical arrangement—for example, keeping music and conversations quieter after 11 p.m.—and ensure the closing is complete. Overall, the task is handled clearly, with the main ideas extended sufficiently for this situation.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The information follows a clear progression: you introduce the noise, explain its impact, acknowledge the neighbour’s perspective, and make a request. Paragraphing helps distinguish these stages, and linking phrases such as “As my final year exams are going on” and “Since I am going through my examination phase” show how the ideas relate. However, the two middle paragraphs repeat the exam-related reason, and the transition from describing the noise to explaining its effect could be more concise. The final sign-off, “Kind reg,” is incomplete and makes the ending feel abrupt. Reducing repeated explanation and using a complete closing would make the organisation feel more polished while preserving its clear progression.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of vocabulary for a neighbourly complaint, including “persistant noise,” “disrupt my study time,” “a great deal of inconvenience,” and “lower the volume.” These phrases communicate the situation and request clearly, and the tone is generally polite. Some choices are inaccurate or unnatural, however: “extremely a frustrating situation” and “aware about our sorroundings” do not sound idiomatic, while “Kind reg” is not a complete conventional sign-off. There are also spelling errors in “persistant” and “sorroundings.” Aim for more natural collocations and check spelling carefully; this would make the letter sound more fluent and appropriately formal without changing its meaning.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The response includes both simple statements and more complex sentences, such as the sentence beginning “Whenever I tried to focus” and the conditional request “I would really appreciate it if you could understand my situation.” These structures help explain the problem and make a polite suggestion. Some grammatical errors remain: “It disrupt my study time” needs subject–verb agreement, and “from last 5 days” needs a more accurate time expression. Capitalisation is also inconsistent, as in “It” after a comma. The sentence about noises that “started coming” shifts awkwardly between past and present time. Review agreement, tense consistency, articles and punctuation, while continuing to use varied sentence forms.
