Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Mr James,

I am writing this letter to express my inconvienience caused by you later at night because of loud noise that really bothers me and my family.

Its been happening from past few days that i hear lot of running footsteps and loud video game cheers downstairs. Earlier i thought you might have guests on weekends but now this continued whole week.

Me and my wife are working indiviuals and starts our shift early at 7 am and it is really hard for us to fall sleep in this much noise. This not only affects our sleep but also affects are work performance as we are not able to concentrate well due to lack of sleep. Moreover, My parents are old too and their health also gets afftected because of noise.

It would be really great if you can lower your video game cheers and stops running later at night. You can play at buildings common room downstairs which is big enough to run. It also has screen projector as well if you want to play video games there too.

I would be very grateful to you if you consider my solution.

Yours truly,

Richard.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5

The letter clearly addresses all three requirements: you describe the repeated late-night noise, explain its effects on your household, and propose a practical alternative. Details such as the footsteps and video-game cheering make the situation specific, while the early work shifts and your parents’ health explain why it matters. The suggestion to use the building’s common room, including its projector, is relevant and shows consideration for your neighbour. The purpose and polite request remain clear throughout. To make the response more fully developed, clarify the hours or frequency of the noise and state more directly what change you are asking for, such as keeping noise down after a particular time. The content is effective, though a few points could be more precisely framed.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The letter has a clear progression: it introduces the complaint, describes when and what is happening, explains the impact, and then offers a solution. Paragraphing supports this sequence, and linking expressions such as “Moreover” and “It would be really great if” help connect the ideas. The closing is appropriate for a neighbourly request. Some connections could be smoother and more precise: “Earlier I thought…” followed by “but now this continued whole week” is understandable but awkwardly expressed, and the shift from the noise problem to the common-room suggestion could be introduced more explicitly. Overall, the organisation is easy to follow; more natural transitions and clearer reference to the repeated noise would make the cohesion less noticeable.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use enough vocabulary to communicate the complaint and its effects, including “running footsteps,” “work performance,” “concentrate,” and “common room.” The wording is generally relevant, but several spelling and word-choice errors reduce precision and naturalness: “inconvienience,” “indiviu[a]ls,” and “afftected” are misspelled, while “video game cheers” is an unusual collocation for the sounds described. “Lower your video game cheers” also does not express the request naturally. Aim for accurate, conventional phrases such as “loud gaming noises” and “keep the noise down.” Greater control of spelling, word forms, and collocations would make the message more fluent and appropriate without changing its clear meaning.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response includes both simple statements and longer sentences, for example the explanation beginning “This not only affects our sleep…” and the conditional request “It would be really great if you can…”. However, errors occur across several sentence patterns and sometimes make the wording less clear. Examples include “Its been happening from past few days,” “Me and my wife … starts,” and “This not only affects … but also affects are work performance.” There are also problems with verb forms in “lower … and stops running” and with sentence boundaries and capitalization, such as “i” and “My” mid-sentence. Practise accurate subject–verb agreement, possessive forms, and consistent verb patterns in requests. More reliable control of these basics, alongside varied sentence structures, would strengthen the letter.
