IELTS Writing Task 1 question

You live in a small apartment building. You are frequently bothered by noise from your upstairs neighbour's apartment.

Write a letter to your neighbour. In your letter
• describe the situation.
• explain why it is a problem for you.
• suggest a solution.

You do NOT need to write any addresses.

Begin your letter as follows:

Dear _________,

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir,

I am writing to inform you about the concerns I have regarding the noise for the past couple of weeks.

Last week there was a gathering at your apartment, the sound of the music was very loud and it kept on going the same until midnight. I requested you to lower the sound, however there the issue was persistent. There has been multiple incidents and we are facing a lot of trouble because our pet is sensitive to loud noise and it induces headaches to my wife. Moreover, the building is quite small, this enhances the noise situation and we are really have a hard time dealing with this.

I can suggest few things which you can do in order to live with peace and harmony. You can keep the volume of music at 80. We can tolerate the sound until 10pm so you can plan your gatherings accordingly.

I hope my suggestions could help us with the issue. Thank you so much.

Regards

Zeel

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

You address all three points: you describe loud music and repeated disturbances, explain the effects on your pet and wife, and propose limits on volume and timing. The purpose is clear and the tone is generally considerate, especially in “I hope my suggestions could help us with the issue.” The reasons make the complaint relevant, though the impact on your household is stated briefly rather than developed with a specific example. The proposed “volume of music at 80” is also unclear because the scale or acceptable level is not specified. To strengthen the letter, explain more precisely how the noise affects your daily life and make the requested arrangement clear and practical.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter has a clear overall arrangement: the opening states the concern, the next paragraph describes the disturbance and its effects, and a separate paragraph offers solutions before the closing. This progression makes the message easy to follow. You also use linking expressions such as “however” and “Moreover” to connect points. Some connections are less smooth, however: “there the issue was persistent” is difficult to interpret, and “the building is quite small, this enhances the noise situation” joins two complete ideas with only a comma. The suggestions could also be separated or ordered more clearly. More precise referencing and cleaner links between sentences would make the cohesion feel less mechanical.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

Your vocabulary is adequate for a neighbourly complaint, with relevant expressions such as “gathering,” “sensitive to loud noise,” and “peace and harmony.” These help communicate the situation and your proposed resolution. There are, however, some imprecise or unnatural choices: “the sound of the music” is wordy, “lower the sound” is not the usual collocation, and “live with peace and harmony” sounds overly formal for this context. “Volume of music at 80” is also too vague to convey a usable limit. Aim for natural, specific phrases that suit a polite personal letter, such as asking the neighbour to keep the music at a reasonable level and finish gatherings by an agreed time.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentences, including the explanation beginning “because our pet is sensitive to loud noise” and the suggestion introduced by “so.” The main message remains understandable, but some grammatical errors reduce accuracy. For example, “there was a gathering … the sound … was very loud” creates a comma splice, while “there the issue was persistent” has an unclear sentence structure. In “There has been multiple incidents,” the verb does not agree with the plural subject; “we are really have a hard time” also combines verb forms incorrectly. Practise checking agreement and verb patterns, and divide joined independent clauses with a full stop or a suitable conjunction.
