Dear _________,
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear John,
I am writing to inform you that over the past few weeks, I have been continuously disturbed by
loud noise coming from your apartment. I am staying right below your apartment.
The noise usually starts in the evening around 7 pm, and sometimes it continues till midnight. I can often hear heavy footsteps, people talking loudly, and playing loud music. I respect everyone's privacy and understand that during free time, everyone likes to listen to music and enjoy themselves.
I work during the daytime. After that, once I get home, I have some household chores to finish, and at night I need to rest. But due to loud noise, I am unable to rest, which also prevents me from concentrating on my work the next day. If this were occasional, I would have never complained to you, but it is played regularly.
I suggest that if you can use airpods and listen to music atleast after 10pm so that your free time will also be utilized and I will also not be disturbed.
I hope you will understand my situation and take appropriate action so that we all can stay calmly and this matter gets resolved. Thank you for your cooperation.
Thanks and Regards,
Asmeet

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5
The letter addresses all three requirements clearly: you describe recurring evening noise, explain its effect on your rest and next-day concentration, and propose a practical change. The details about footsteps, loud conversations and music make the situation easy to understand, while “If this were occasional, I would have never complained” helps explain why you are raising the issue. Your request to use headphones after 10 pm is specific and considerate. To make the response more fully developed, clarify whether the noise itself should also be reduced before 10 pm, since it begins at 7 pm, and phrase the request as a courteous proposal rather than an instruction. Overall, the purpose and position remain clear throughout.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The information follows a clear, sensible order: the opening identifies the problem, the next paragraph gives examples, and the later paragraphs explain its impact and suggest a solution. Paragraphing supports this progression, and linking phrases such as “After that,” “But due to,” and “If this were occasional” help connect the ideas. The closing also returns appropriately to resolving the matter. Some connections could be smoother: “But due to loud noise” refers back generally rather than linking precisely to the noise described, and the final request combines several ideas in one long sentence. Use clearer transitions and divide the proposed solution into shorter, more focused sentences to make the letter flow more naturally.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of vocabulary to describe the issue and its consequences, including “continuously disturbed,” “heavy footsteps,” “concentrating,” and “appropriate action.” These choices communicate the problem clearly, and the tone is generally respectful. Some word choices and collocations are less natural, however: “it is played regularly” does not clearly identify what “it” refers to, and “stay calmly” is not the natural expression for living peacefully. “Free time will also be utilized” sounds formal and awkward in this personal letter, while “airpods” should be written as “earphones” or “headphones” in general usage. Aim for precise, natural phrases that suit a neighbourly request, rather than translating expressions directly.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
The letter includes a useful mix of simple and more complex structures. For example, “I respect everyone's privacy and understand that during free time, everyone likes to listen to music” combines ideas effectively, and the conditional sentence beginning “If this were occasional” shows an attempt at more varied grammar. Meaning remains clear throughout. Some errors and awkward constructions remain: “I would have never complained” is better ordered as “I would never have complained,” and “it is played regularly” has an unclear grammatical reference. The sentence beginning “I suggest that if you can use…” is also structurally awkward, and the extra spacing before “so” disrupts punctuation. Practise forming polite requests with a clear main clause, such as “Could you please use headphones after 10 pm?”
