Dear _________,

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Gagan,

I am your neighbour Harshey, Apt. 502. I am writing this letter regarding the noise heard from upstairs during day time.

I do night shifts, and sleep during the day. From last weeks, my sleep is getting disturbed by the vaccum cleaner and kids noise from your apartment upstairs. However, I also requested the management to open the playroom during day hours, which will help reduce the disturbance.

Moreover, I also have noticed that it is mainly because the kids do jump and play so loud in your living area, that it located right above my bedroom. In addition, I am not able to even manage my studies during my exam.

I would like to request if you can accomodate cleaning at your place during afternoon instead of morning time. Also, if childrens can be asked to not to jump on the floor. I would really appreciate your kindness.

Kind regards,

Harshpreet

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

You address all three points in the task: you describe daytime noise from the vacuum cleaner and children, explain that your night shifts and exams make it disruptive, and request changes to cleaning times and the children’s play. The reason the noise affects you is clear, and the letter maintains a polite, appropriate tone. The suggestion to use the playroom adds a relevant possible solution. Some ideas could be developed more fully: for example, clarify whether you are asking the neighbour to use the playroom or simply noting that you have asked management to open it. A more specific, considerate request about when the children could play would also make the proposed solution clearer and better supported.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter has a clear overall sequence: you introduce the complaint, explain its effects, and then make requests. Paragraphing helps separate these stages, and linking expressions such as “However,” “Moreover,” and “In addition” show how points relate. This gives the response a coherent structure. At times, though, the connections feel mechanical or the references are not fully clear. For instance, “However” does not clearly contrast with the preceding sentence, and the playroom suggestion appears without explaining how it relates to the neighbour’s children. Grouping the impact on your sleep and studies together, then presenting the requests in a focused final paragraph, would make the progression smoother and the cohesion more natural.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for this complaint, including “disturbance,” “management,” “accommodate,” and “appreciate your kindness.” These choices help communicate the situation politely, and the reader can understand the main points. Some word choices and collocations are less natural or precise, however: “kids noise” would be better expressed as “noise from the children,” while “accommodate cleaning” does not clearly convey arranging a different cleaning time. There are also spelling errors in “vaccum” and “accomodate,” and “day time” is more naturally written as “daytime.” Aim to use familiar, accurate collocations rather than reaching for formal-sounding phrases that do not fit the intended meaning.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, and the main message remains understandable. For example, “I do night shifts, and sleep during the day” clearly explains your schedule, while the sentence about the children playing above your bedroom attempts to add detail. Some grammatical errors remain, particularly in sentence construction and verb patterns. “From last weeks, my sleep is getting disturbed” needs a more accurate time expression and tense, and “if childrens can be asked to not to jump” has problems with the plural noun and the structure after “asked.” The clause “that it located right above my bedroom” also needs a verb. Reviewing these patterns and checking each sentence for a complete, correctly formed clause would improve accuracy.
