Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Megan,

I hope you are doing well. I am witing this letter to raise a concern about the disturbing noise that comes from your apartment lately everyday specially at night times.

I have been preparing for a competive exam that is scheduled this week. While I was preparing for the exam yesturday, a sharp loud music sound that was hinder my studies despite shutting the doors. That noise i noticed was coming from your appartment which is very bothering. As it hinders my conentration. That night I was not able to focus on my studies and hence, I had to wear headphone's to cut the noise. This is not the one time I have encountered this situation. However, from past couple of days the sound from your appartment disturbs not only my studies but also my grandparents sleep. Although, we tried to pull our windows down and shut the doors but still it can be heard. This is causing a severe health issue to my grandparents. However, to not make the issue serious i firmly request you to either decrease the volume of the music at night times espcially after ten pm or install soundproof doors so that the sound does bother other neighbous.

As a responsible neighbour it is our responsibility to maintain the decorum..

I hope you understand.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5

The letter clearly addresses all three requirements: you describe repeated late-night music, explain its effect on your exam preparation and your grandparents’ sleep, and request lower volume after 10 p.m. or soundproofing. The specific example of struggling to study despite closing the doors helps support your complaint, and the polite opening and closing suit a neighbourly letter. The health concern is relevant, though “a severe health issue” is asserted rather than explained, and the proposed soundproof doors may be less practical than agreeing on quiet hours. To strengthen the response further, develop the request in a more collaborative way—for example, suggest discussing a mutually suitable time or ask the neighbour to let you know if there is a special occasion causing the noise. Overall, the purpose and position remain clear throughout.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The information follows a sensible sequence: you introduce the concern, give an example, describe its wider impact, and make a request. This gives the letter a coherent overall shape, and phrases such as “While I was preparing” and “However” help connect events and contrast. However, several ideas are crowded into one long paragraph, so the shift from your exam to your grandparents’ sleep and then to the solution is not clearly signposted. Some linking is also mechanical or repetitive, particularly the repeated use of “However,” and the sentence beginning “As it hinders my concentration” is detached from the preceding thought. Use two or three paragraphs and vary the transitions; this would make the progression clearer and bring the organisation closer to a more flexible, consistently controlled style.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use some relevant vocabulary for the situation, including “disturbing noise,” “concentration,” “soundproof doors,” and “maintain the decorum.” These choices communicate the complaint and its consequences. However, spelling errors and imprecise or unnatural combinations are noticeable, such as “witing,” “competive,” “yesturday,” “appartment,” and “neighbous.” Phrases such as “sharp loud music sound” and “at night times” are also awkward, while “the sound does bother other neighbours” appears to omit the intended negative. This limits the range and control of vocabulary, and some errors make the reader pause. Proofread carefully and favour natural collocations, such as “loud music,” “late at night,” and “disturb other residents.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The letter attempts a mixture of simple and more complex structures, including the time clause “While I was preparing for the exam yesterday” and the contrast introduced by “Although.” The main message is generally understandable, but errors recur in sentence construction and punctuation. For example, “a sharp loud music sound that was hinder my studies” has an incorrect verb form and an awkwardly constructed clause; “As it hinders my concentration” is a fragment, and “Although, we tried…” is not punctuated correctly. There are also problems with apostrophes and sentence boundaries, as in “headphone's” and “heard.This.” These issues sometimes interrupt reading. Aim to make each sentence complete, check verb forms after auxiliaries, and use punctuation to separate the long chains of ideas.
