Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Gurdeep,

I am wriitng to express my concerns related to noise which is created by your family members when they were at home. Actually, i live underground apaprtment so, when i went at home, your family members created noise by listening loud volume music and sometime conflict with each other, which negative impacts on my sleeping and family member because we are working people that is why we need to get up early in morning for going work. Moreover, it also impacts on productivity of work because we can not concentrate on our work due to a lot of noise. Furthermore, i want to request you to focus on this issue by either giving punishment their members who create noise or warning in turn of which they would avoid to create noise when they at home.

I hope you consider my suggestion and let me know as soon as possible when they would solve this problem.

Yours faithfully,

Gagan

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address all three points: you describe loud music and arguments, explain that the noise affects sleep and concentration at work, and ask your neighbour to take action. The reasons are relevant and make the impact on your household clear. However, some ideas are less fully developed: for example, the request to give family members “punishment” is not explained and may sound confrontational, while a practical solution such as keeping music low at night or agreeing quiet hours would be clearer. The letter also lacks a brief, courteous opening and could state the situation more precisely, including when the noise usually occurs. Overall, the purpose is clear, but the proposed solution and supporting details could be more fully explained.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter follows a generally clear sequence: it raises the concern, explains its effects, proposes action, and closes with a request for a response. Connectors such as “Moreover” and “Furthermore” help show how the reasons and request relate, and the closing is easy to identify. This gives the message coherent overall organisation. However, the long opening paragraph combines the situation, its effects, and the proposed solution, so separating these into focused paragraphs would make the progression easier to follow. Some linking is also mechanical, with several ideas joined in one extended sentence. References such as “they” and “their members” are not always clear, which briefly makes it harder to tell whether you mean the neighbour’s family or the people making the noise.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use enough vocabulary to communicate the main concern, including “noise,” “sleeping,” “productivity,” and “concentrate.” There are also attempts at more formal expressions, such as “express my concerns” and “consider my suggestion.” However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural, including “noise which is created,” “loud volume music,” “negative impacts on my sleeping,” and “warning in turn of which.” Spelling errors such as “wriitng” and “apaprtment” also reduce accuracy. These issues do not prevent the reader from understanding the central message, but they make parts of the letter less fluent and precise. Aim for natural combinations such as “loud music,” “disturbs my sleep,” and “give them a warning.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, using clauses with “because,” “when,” and “which” to explain the situation and its effects. The main message remains understandable, but some grammatical errors occur in these longer structures. For example, “when they were at home” shifts tense awkwardly when describing a recurring situation, and “when they at home” is missing a verb. There are also problems with articles and sentence construction in “i live underground apaprtment” and “for going work.” The sentence beginning “Actually” is especially difficult to follow because several clauses are joined without clear boundaries. Use shorter sentences where needed, check verb forms and articles, and punctuate each complete idea clearly.
