Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Raman,
Hope you are doing well and hope you had a good time during your business trip, i promise we will make a plan to meet soon. I am writing this letter to inquired about the broker 3D portrait's frame. When i reached home on Sunday evening i notice the portrait was felt on ground and glass was broken into small pieces.
After examining living area i came to know, you left windows open in living area and due to Strom last night, portrait fell on the ground due to strong wind flow. This is my dog Jack's portrait. Jack passed away last year and this portrait is very important to me. Good thing is that there is no damage to portrait only the glass frame was broken.
I advice you to check all the window locks and door before leaving the apartment. If the windows are closed but unlocked they open easily with wind. Hope you will take care of these things in future.
I have one week holidays next month, if you will be free then we can make plans to visit Shimla.
Your loving,
Arsh

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The letter covers all three bullet points: describing the broken item (the 3D portrait frame), explaining its sentimental value (a memorial to the dog, Jack), and stating what the friend should do (check windows/locks). The tone is generally appropriate for a letter to a friend, although the transition from the complaint to the suggestion is slightly abrupt. The ideas are relevant and clearly presented, fulfilling the requirements of the task effectively.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is organized into logical paragraphs, with a clear introduction, body, and conclusion. Ideas flow reasonably well, although the use of cohesive devices is somewhat basic. For example, the transition between the description of the damage and the advice to the friend could be smoother. The use of referencing (e.g., 'this portrait', 'these things') helps maintain the connection between sentences, but the overall structure could benefit from more varied linking words to improve the flow between ideas.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the student to convey the situation clearly. However, there are several errors in word choice and form, such as 'inquired' instead of 'inquire', 'broker' instead of 'broken', and 'Strom' instead of 'storm'. While these errors do not impede communication, they indicate a need for more precise control over word forms and spelling. The range of vocabulary is sufficient for a semi-formal letter but lacks the sophistication required for higher bands.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The student uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with verb tenses and articles (e.g., 'i notice the portrait was felt on ground', 'i advice you'). The misuse of 'i' instead of 'I' throughout the text is a persistent error. While the meaning is generally clear, the frequency of these errors prevents the writing from reaching a higher band. More attention to subject-verb agreement and consistent tense usage is needed.
