Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Nidhi

I hope you are doing well, I am writing this letter to inform you that I discovered my laptop was broken when you last stay at my home.

As last month I was on trip to Himachal from 11-7-26 to 21-7-26, I have let you stay at my home for ten days, and I have given you my laptop to use for any office or any personal important work. Though I had not used my laptop till yesterday morning but I opened my it in afternoon I have found that my laptop’s screen is broken and display just got blank. This laptop is very much important for me ,because all my personal photos and significant documents are saved in it.

I am requesting you to please get my laptop repair as soon as possible, as I work from home so I would need my laptop. I will be thankful to you.

Waiting for your positive reply.

Yours lovingly,

Tinkle

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

You have addressed all three bullet points required by the task: describing the broken laptop, explaining its importance, and requesting a solution. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend, though it leans slightly formal. The ideas are relevant and clearly presented. To reach a higher band, you could expand slightly on the 'importance' aspect by describing a specific project or memory that makes the laptop irreplaceable, which would add more depth to your response. Overall, the task is fulfilled effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body, and conclusion. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'because' and 'as' to link ideas. However, the paragraphing is a bit disjointed; the second paragraph is quite long and contains several distinct ideas that could be separated for better flow. Additionally, some transitions between sentences feel slightly mechanical. Using a wider variety of linking words (e.g., 'consequently', 'furthermore', 'unfortunately') would improve the flow and help the reader follow your narrative more smoothly.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, such as 'significant documents' and 'valuable possession'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'I have let you stay' (should be 'I let you stay') and 'get my laptop repair' (should be 'get my laptop repaired'). The vocabulary is functional but lacks the precision and variety required for a higher band. Focusing on more natural collocations and avoiding repetitive phrasing will help you improve your lexical range.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally distract the reader. Examples include 'when you last stay' (should be 'stayed'), 'I opened my it' (should be 'I opened it'), and 'I would need my laptop' (should be 'I will need'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with comma usage. While these errors do not prevent the message from being understood, they indicate a need for more careful proofreading and a better grasp of verb tenses and sentence construction.
