Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Alex,
I hope you will be doing good. I am writing this letter in order to discuss about the broken LCD of my computer during your stay at my residence when I was on Thailand trip last month.
First of all I must say that I am very disappointed about your careless behavior towards my household things. The point at which I am extremely annoyed is the broken LCD. It is totally shattered. I don't understand that how this happened. It was very expensive and I had bought it after saving for almost two years.
You know I am making a new software and whole of my work is on this screen. I have deadline for my project after this month and I can not proceed further without buying a new one. I am very upset about it as I have no savings left for the new screen.
As it was your fault, I want you to pay for my new LCD. I might consider returning you half money but that is possible only after two to four months. I hope that you will understand my situation.
It would be great if you could purchase this LCD within 2 days.
Waiting for your reply.
Your friend,
Mariam

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
You have addressed all three bullet points in the prompt: describing the broken item, explaining its importance, and stating what you want the friend to do. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend, although it is quite direct and confrontational. The ideas are relevant and clearly presented, fulfilling the requirements of the task effectively. To improve, you could soften the tone slightly to sound more natural in a personal letter, as the current phrasing feels a bit demanding. Overall, the response is well-structured and covers all necessary information.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the task. You use some cohesive devices like 'First of all', 'As it was your fault', and 'It would be great if', which help the flow of ideas. However, some transitions feel a bit mechanical, and the paragraphing could be more refined to ensure smoother progression between the description of the damage and the request for compensation. Overall, the message is easy to follow.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You use a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your meaning clearly, such as 'disappointed', 'careless behavior', and 'shattered'. There are some minor issues with word choice and collocation, such as 'discuss about' (which should be 'discuss') and 'whole of my work' (which should be 'all of my work'). While the vocabulary is adequate for the task, incorporating more precise or sophisticated collocations would elevate the score. The language is generally natural, but there is room for more variety in your descriptive language.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'I hope you will be doing good' (should be 'I hope you are doing well'), 'I have deadline' (missing an article), and 'I might consider returning you half money' (should be 'returning half the money'). While these errors are noticeable, they do not impede communication. To reach a higher band, you should focus on article usage, verb tense consistency, and prepositions to ensure greater accuracy in your complex sentences.
