Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Pooja,
I hope you are doing great. firstly, i would thank you for looking after my apartment when i was away. After returned my place, i noticed one antique clock has broken. Even the glass and wood was also damaged.
That was so close to my heart as it gave me as birthday give by my grandfather and also it carried sentimental values and he passed away a few year ago. That is why it was special to me. I would appericiate if you can tell me how that broken and i would like to pay for the repair. I know sometimes accidents happen. If clock does not repaired so we can find the valuable solution together, i do not want to make any misunderstanding in our friendship.
I look forward to hearing from you soon.
Thank you.
Best regards,
Kiran

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
You have addressed all three bullet points: describing the clock, explaining its importance, and suggesting a resolution. However, the response is slightly under the 150-word minimum requirement, which impacts the overall development of your ideas. While the tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend, the explanation regarding the damage could be more detailed to fully meet the task requirements. To improve, ensure you expand on your points sufficiently to meet the length requirement, as this will allow you to provide more depth and clarity to your narrative.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The letter follows a logical progression, moving from the greeting to the issue, the emotional significance, and finally the proposed solution. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'firstly', 'that is why', and 'I look forward to'. However, the paragraphing is not fully developed, and some transitions feel a bit mechanical. To reach a higher band, try to use a wider variety of linking words and ensure that each paragraph has a clear, singular focus. The current structure is functional but could benefit from more sophisticated signposting to improve the flow between sentences.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
Your vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing you to communicate the situation clearly. You use some relevant terms like 'antique clock', 'sentimental values', and 'repair'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'After returned my place' (should be 'Upon returning to my place') and 'how that broken' (should be 'how it broke'). To improve, focus on learning common collocations and ensure you are using the correct word forms. Expanding your range of descriptive adjectives would also help convey your feelings more effectively.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You demonstrate a mix of simple and some complex sentence structures. However, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with verb tenses and sentence construction, such as 'it gave me as birthday give' (should be 'it was a birthday gift') and 'If clock does not repaired' (should be 'If the clock cannot be repaired'). These errors are noticeable and occasionally distract the reader, though they do not fully impede communication. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of passive voice, which is essential when discussing damaged items.
