Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Kang,
I hope you are doing great! I am writing this to express my disappointmemt with heavy heart when I find out my broken diamond necklace after returning home from a trip.
I appreciate you came to stay and took care of my apartment while I was away for a buisness trip for a while. I had a precious diamond necklace that I kept in the wardrobe in a red jewelry box. It was a stunning piece of jewelry, was quite expensive. I find the locket is broken from its chain.
This necklace was the last gift from my grandmother and she gave me to wear it on my wedding day which is next month. I was always dreaming this and protecting this to wear it on my special day but it ruin my day when I saw it broken as this holds great emotional values aand worth more than my savings.
I would be greatful if you could fix this broken piece of necklace before my wedding day. I hope you value my feelings.
I hope to see you soon!
Yours lovingly,
John

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You described the broken diamond necklace, explained its sentimental importance as a gift from your grandmother for your upcoming wedding, and clearly stated your request for the friend to have it repaired. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend, although the expression of disappointment is quite direct. The ideas are well-developed and the purpose of the letter is clear from the beginning. To reach a higher band, ensure that the transition between the disappointment and the request for repair feels more natural and less abrupt.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The letter follows a logical structure with clear paragraphing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the task, which helps the reader follow your narrative. You use some cohesive devices like 'I appreciate you came to stay' and 'This necklace was', which help link your ideas. However, some transitions are a bit mechanical, and the flow between sentences could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words or phrases. For example, the shift from describing the necklace to explaining its importance could be smoother with better signposting.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You have a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly, such as 'stunning piece of jewelry' and 'emotional values'. However, there are several spelling errors ('disappointmemt', 'buisness', 'aand', 'greatful') and some minor collocation issues, such as 'find the locket is broken' instead of 'discovered the locket was broken'. While these errors do not impede communication, they prevent the response from reaching a higher band. Focusing on proofreading for common spelling mistakes and refining your word choices will help you achieve a higher score in this criterion.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as 'I was always dreaming this and protecting this to wear it on my special day'. However, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with verb tenses and article usage, such as 'when I find out my broken diamond necklace' (should be 'found out') and 'it ruin my day' (should be 'it ruined'). While your meaning is always clear, these persistent errors in basic grammar and tense consistency indicate that you have not yet achieved the level of control required for a higher band score.
