Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Aman,
I hope you are doing well. I am writing this letter to express my strong disagreement with you as I found the broken family photo frame given by my late great grandfather.
Since I came back last week from the trip and you never ever contacted me after. I left my apartment as I thought you gonna stay comfortably but the surprise you gave me was totally unexpected for me.
I am truly upset with you the photo frame was the last valuable thing for me left by my grandfather. It was such a valuable thing. It is not even in the repair condition.
I would like you to repair it if you find any solution or please connect with me I understand that it definitely happen mistakenly by you
I hope this letter finds you well or you may understand my generous feelings regarding the valuable thing.
Your friend
Vivek

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The letter addresses all three bullet points: describing the broken item, explaining its significance, and requesting a solution. However, the tone is inconsistent and overly aggressive for a letter to a friend. Phrases like 'I am writing this letter to express my strong disagreement with you' are unnatural in this context and sound more like a formal complaint. While the task requirements are met, the development of ideas is somewhat repetitive, particularly regarding the value of the frame. To improve, ensure the tone remains appropriate for the relationship described while maintaining the necessary clarity to address the task requirements.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The letter is organized into short paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the narrative. However, the use of cohesive devices is limited and sometimes mechanical. For example, the transition 'Since I came back last week' is slightly awkward, and the connection between sentences is often abrupt. The flow of ideas could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words (e.g., 'consequently', 'furthermore', 'however') to create a smoother progression. Additionally, the paragraphing is a bit disjointed; grouping the description and the emotional significance together would create a more logical structure.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task but lacks precision and variety. There is significant repetition of the word 'valuable' (used three times in close proximity) and 'thing'. Phrases like 'repair condition' are non-standard; a more natural phrasing would be 'beyond repair'. The tone is also affected by the limited lexical range, as the student struggles to express disappointment without sounding overly formal or accusatory. Expanding the range of adjectives and using more precise collocations would significantly improve the quality of the writing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentences, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. For instance, 'I understand that it definitely happen mistakenly by you' contains errors in tense and word choice. There are also issues with punctuation and sentence boundaries, such as the run-on sentence: 'I would like you to repair it if you find any solution or please connect with me I understand that it definitely happen mistakenly by you'. These errors occur frequently, though the overall meaning remains understandable.
