Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Robert,
I hope you are doing well!
I would like to raise a concern regarding my apartment while I was on a vacation. To start with, I notice the gift given by my grandmother is broken which was one of my favourite thing and most valuable memory with her. When I turned 16 years old, my nanny bring that photo frame as a present on my birthday celebration since then I keep that nearby my bed while sleeping in night. The moment I entered my room, I found out that the photo frame glass is broken but the position of the frame was as it is how I left it. Therefore, I am writing this letter that you should have tell me the facts how it had happened by leaving note just beside the frame. Additionally, I am requesting you to bring me new frame so I can swap the image in new frame.
Thank you,
Kamil Ghori.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The letter addresses all three bullet points: describing the broken item, explaining its significance, and stating the desired resolution. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend, though it leans slightly formal. The ideas are relevant and clearly communicated. To reach a higher band, the development of the 'importance' section could be more emotive, and the request for the friend's action could be phrased with more nuance to better reflect the social context of the relationship.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The letter follows a logical progression, moving from the opening to the problem, the explanation, and finally the request. Paragraphing is present, though the letter is quite short, making the structure feel a bit compressed. Cohesive devices such as 'To start with', 'Therefore', and 'Additionally' are used to link ideas, although some transitions feel slightly mechanical. The referencing is generally clear, and the reader can easily follow the narrative flow from the discovery of the damage to the proposed solution.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing for clear communication. There are some minor collocation issues, such as 'nanny bring' (should be 'nanny brought') and 'swap the image in new frame' (should be 'replace the photo in a new frame'). While the range is sufficient to convey the message, it lacks the flexibility and precision of higher bands. The use of 'favourite thing' and 'as it is' is functional but basic. Expanding the range of descriptive adjectives would enhance the quality of the writing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text, such as 'I notice' (should be 'I noticed'), 'nanny bring' (should be 'nanny brought'), and 'you should have tell me' (should be 'you should have told me'). These errors are frequent enough to be noticeable but do not impede the overall meaning of the letter. Punctuation is generally acceptable, but the sentence structure could be more varied to improve the flow and demonstrate greater control.
