Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Rahul ,

I hope you are doing well , I am writing this to share a concern with you regarding my laptop that broke last week .

I believe you enjoyed your stay at my apartment during your visit , as it was comfortable . I would like to mention one small issue with you that i found my laptop screen was damaged . I am not blaming you but i wanted to know that mistakenly from your side or from someone else.

I hope you do not mind if you share with me something regarding it , i think it would help me find the exact region . This laptop is really important for me as it contains valuable information regarding my company , losing it to someone's hand could create an unnecessary burden for me and even to my job.

I just want to check that if it happens from you then i am willing to repair it from my pocket without any concern. I believe you get back to me when you have free time .

Please feel free to contact me . I look forward to your response.

Sukhpal ,

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The letter covers all three bullet points: the broken item (laptop screen), its importance (work-related data), and the request (clarification and offer to pay). However, the tone is somewhat inconsistent. While you state you are not blaming your friend, the phrasing 'I am not blaming you but i wanted to know that mistakenly from your side' is slightly accusatory and awkward. The request for the friend to pay for repairs is also handled in a way that feels a bit contradictory, as you offer to pay for it yourself while simultaneously asking them to explain what happened. To improve, ensure the tone remains consistently friendly and clear throughout.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter is organized into logical paragraphs, which helps the reader follow your points. You use some basic cohesive devices like 'I hope' and 'I would like to mention,' which provide a clear structure. However, the flow between sentences is occasionally mechanical. For example, the transition between the laptop being important and the offer to pay for repairs feels abrupt. Using a wider range of linking words (e.g., 'consequently,' 'furthermore,' 'in addition') would help improve the logical progression of your ideas. Paragraphing is present, but the spacing and punctuation around the paragraphs could be more standard.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, such as 'valuable information,' 'unnecessary burden,' and 'comfortable.' However, there are some word choice errors that affect precision. For instance, 'find the exact region' is an incorrect collocation; you likely meant 'find out what happened' or 'determine the cause.' Additionally, the phrase 'losing it to someone's hand' is unnatural. To reach a higher band, focus on using more precise collocations and avoiding repetitive phrasing. Your spelling is generally accurate, but ensure you capitalize 'I' consistently throughout the letter.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as 'I believe you enjoyed your stay... as it was comfortable.' However, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with verb tenses and sentence construction. For example, 'if it happens from you then i am willing' should be 'if it happened because of you, I would be willing.' There are also issues with punctuation, such as spaces before commas and inconsistent capitalization. While these errors do not prevent the reader from understanding your message, they occur frequently enough to impact the overall fluency of the writing.
