Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Vishal,

Hope you are doing well my dear friend. Actually, I am writing this letter in order to express my feelings regarding one of the dinner set which is broken when I was not at home.

Honestly, this dinner set played crucial role in my life as a lot of memories are connected with it. This was the first thing which was bought by me with my first salary. Not only this, it was an antique piece in my favourite colour and it’s not available in the market nowadays. Also, everyone praised its beauty whenever they visit to me at my home.

I vividly remember that I kept it in my closet when I left the home. Nevertheless, I don’t know the exact reason of breaking it. I don’t know it’s your fault or not, I just need a favour from you. As far as I know, there are an expert for setting the broken things, so I will send this to you. Whenever you will get free time, can you please fix this by going to that expert. Sorry for this inconvenience. Catch you soon buddy.

Yours loving

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The letter covers all three bullet points: describing the broken item, explaining its importance, and requesting a specific action. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend, though the request for the friend to take the item to an expert is slightly unusual in context. The ideas are relevant and clearly presented, fulfilling the requirements of the task effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each serving a distinct purpose. Cohesive devices such as 'Not only this', 'Nevertheless', and 'As far as I know' are used to link ideas. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the flow between the description of the item and the request for help could be smoother. Overall, the progression of ideas is clear and easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task. You use some good descriptive phrases like 'vividly remember' and 'antique piece'. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'dinner set which is broken when I was not at home' (should be 'was broken while I was away') and 'there are an expert' (should be 'there is an expert'). Expanding your range of synonyms would help elevate the score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are recurring grammatical errors, particularly with articles ('the dinner set', 'the home') and verb tense consistency ('whenever they visit to me'). Some phrasing is slightly awkward, such as 'I don't know it's your fault or not'. Improving your control over subject-verb agreement and article usage will lead to higher accuracy.
