Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Rahul,
I hope you are doing well. I am writing this letter regarding a broken flower pot that was emotionally valuable to me. Everything is in good condition but this item is more than anything else for me.
As you know, I was on a trip and I let you to stay at my house for few days. Everything felt normal when I reached home yesterday, but after about one hour, I realized the flower pot on my bedside table was not there. I searched it and I found it broken in recycle bin. That flower pot was given to me by my great grandmother and she is not anymore. I am emotionally attached to it and it helped me to stay in present when I put some flowers in it. If you can come to my house and help me to make it again with some glue and colours, I would really appreciate it.
I hope you will care about my feelings and come to my place so that we can work towards it.
Thank you
Your sincerely
Sukh

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You described the broken item (a flower pot), explained its sentimental value (a gift from your great-grandmother), and clearly stated what you would like your friend to do (help repair it). The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend, maintaining a balance between expressing disappointment and remaining constructive. The ideas are relevant and well-developed, ensuring the reader understands both the situation and your expectations. To improve, ensure that the transition between the initial greeting and the description of the incident is smoother, as the current opening feels slightly abrupt.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The letter follows a logical progression, moving from the situation to the specific problem, then to the emotional context, and finally to the proposed solution. Paragraphing is used, though the structure could be improved by separating the introduction, the body (the incident and its importance), and the conclusion more distinctly. You use some cohesive devices like 'As you know' and 'but', but the flow could be enhanced by using a wider variety of linking words to connect your sentences more fluidly. The referencing is generally clear, and the reader can easily follow the narrative of the event.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task. Phrases like 'emotionally valuable' and 'emotionally attached' are effective in conveying your feelings. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'make it again' (should be 'repair' or 'fix') and 'she is not anymore' (which is an unnatural way to express that someone has passed away). While these errors do not impede communication, using more precise vocabulary would elevate the quality of your writing. Expanding your range to include more descriptive adjectives would also help convey the significance of the item more effectively.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'I let you to stay' (should be 'I let you stay'), 'for few days' (should be 'for a few days'), and 'searched it' (should be 'searched for it'). Additionally, 'Your sincerely' is an incorrect sign-off; it should be 'Yours sincerely'. While these errors are noticeable, they do not prevent the reader from understanding your message. To reach a higher band, focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles, as well as ensuring that your sentence structures are consistently accurate.
