Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points: describing the broken item, explaining its sentimental value, and requesting specific action from the friend. The tone is generally appropriate for a letter to a friend, although it fluctuates slightly in formality. The ideas are relevant and clearly presented, providing enough detail to satisfy the task requirements. To reach a higher band, ensure that the tone remains consistent throughout and avoid minor inconsistencies, such as the confusion regarding the material of the item (initially described as ceramic, then later as marble).
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The letter is organized into logical paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the narrative. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and limited. For example, the transition 'additionally' is used, but other parts of the text rely on simple sentence structures that lack smooth linking. The paragraphing is present but could be more effectively used to separate the description of the item from the request for help. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring better flow between sentences would enhance the overall coherence.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to convey their message clearly. There are some attempts at more descriptive language, such as 'dear to me' and 'piece of art'. However, there are instances of imprecise word choice and minor errors, such as 'incidence' instead of 'incident' and 'conform' instead of 'confirm'. The range is sufficient for the task but lacks the flexibility and precision required for higher bands. Focusing on more natural collocations and avoiding repetitive phrasing would improve this score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with verb tenses ('I'm pretty much fine to'), articles ('in tv lounge'), and punctuation (missing commas and capitalization of 'i'). Some sentences are slightly awkward, such as 'whenever i saw this give me energy'. These errors do not impede communication, but they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. More attention to subject-verb agreement and basic punctuation would significantly improve the accuracy of the writing.
