Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Raman,
I hope you are doing great. I am writing this letter to express my disappointment regarding a valuable possession of mine that was broken while you were staying at my home.
When I returned home yesterday, I noticed that my vintage ceramic vase which was kept in the living room side table was shattered into pieces.
As you know that rare antique vase was incerdibly important to me because that handed down to me by my grandmother, so it carries immense amount of sentiments and emotions that can never be replaced.
Since it was not able to be simply glued back together, I would like you to help me find a similar vintage replacement online, or alternatively, cover the cost of an equivalent antique piece.
I value our friendship and hope we can resolve this matter smoothly. Let me know when you are free to discuss it.
Warm regards,
Surpreet

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly described the broken possession (a vintage ceramic vase), explained its sentimental importance as a family heirloom from your grandmother, and provided a clear request for a resolution. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend, balancing disappointment with a desire to maintain the relationship. The ideas are well-developed and the purpose of the letter is clear from the outset. You have fully satisfied the requirements of the task.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The letter is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the prompt, which makes the letter easy to follow. You have used appropriate paragraphing and basic cohesive devices such as 'When I returned', 'Since it was', and 'alternatively' to link your thoughts. The flow is natural and the relationship between the ideas is clear. The structure is effective for a formal or semi-formal letter, and the transition between the description of the incident and the proposed solution is smooth.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary, using terms like 'valuable possession', 'shattered into pieces', 'sentiments', and 'equivalent'. There is one minor spelling error ('incerdibly' instead of 'incredibly'), but this does not impede communication. You use collocations effectively, such as 'resolve this matter smoothly'. The vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning with precision and style. To reach a higher band, you could incorporate slightly more sophisticated or idiomatic expressions, but the current range is well-suited to the task.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. For example, the sentence 'Since it was not able to be simply glued back together, I would like you to help me...' shows good control of complex grammar. There are a few minor grammatical slips, such as 'that handed down to me' (should be 'that was handed down to me') and 'immense amount of sentiments' (should be 'immense amount of sentiment'). However, these errors are infrequent and do not interfere with the clarity of your message. The majority of your sentences are error-free.
