Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Gagan,

I hope you are doing great.

I'm writing to complain about the damage you did while staying at my house. I know you are my friend and these things does not matter but I trusted you with my stuff when I left for trip. After coming back I was really upset because I saw my favourite study table is broken from the side.

That table is really important to me because It was a gift from my parents on my 18th bithday. I spent most of my on that table while studying or working. Moreover, as you know I am very particular about my things.

I would really appreciate if could arrange a techician to repair my table. Apart from that I would advise you be careful with the stuff If you are staying at someone else home as some people are really attached to their things.

I hope you don't mind about my disappointment and you understand my emotions.

Yours Lovingly,

Preet Nagi

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You successfully cover all three bullet points required in the task instructions. You clearly describe the broken possession ('my favourite study table is broken from the side'), explain its importance ('a gift from my parents on my 18th bithday'), and outline what you would like your friend to do ('arrange a techician to repair my table'). The tone is appropriately semi-formal to personal, given that you are writing to a friend, and your purpose is evident throughout. All parts of the prompt are addressed adequately without any major omissions, meeting the criteria for a solid score in this category.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

Your letter is easy to follow and uses logical paragraphing to separate different points, such as the description and importance of the table, followed by your request. Cohesive devices are generally handled well, as seen with transition words like 'Moreover' and 'Apart from that'. However, there are minor cohesion issues and slight awkwardness in referencing, such as the abrupt shift into advice. Overall progression is clear, and the structure fits the format of a personal letter well.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for this task, using appropriate terms related to personal belongings and repairs like 'techician' (spelled technician) and 'particular about my things'. However, there are some noticeable spelling errors, such as 'bithday' instead of birthday, and some lexical repetition. The register is generally appropriate for writing to a friend, but vocabulary choices remain mostly standard rather than showing a wide or flexible range.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as 'I know you are my friend and these things does not matter' and 'I would really appreciate if could arrange a techician'. There are several grammatical errors present, such as subject-verb agreement ('these things does' instead of 'these things do'), missing words ('if could' instead of 'if you could'), and spelling/typographical slips. While these errors do not impede communication, they prevent a higher band score due to their frequency.
