Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Smith,

I hope this letter finds you well. I am writing to express my concern about a most important item that i found broken when i came to home from my college trip and i left you at my home for take care.

when i entered my room i looked at the table and there was no pot. Then i immediately, start searching and i saw some parts of clay that are thrown in the pot of flower near the window. And i started try to make it.

As you know this pot was given by my grandmother on my 21st birthday in order to show her love towards me. She made this with the use of clay soil and takes approximatly 15 days to make a beautiful flower pot. It was most valueable for me as i attached with this emotionally.

I did not expect from you that you broke this because you know its value for me. Apart from that you hide a truth from me as you did not tell me and when i asked you started make excuses. This is really make me upset.

I hope next time if anyting i need to know you tell me as well as not lied with me

Best regards,

Manpreet Kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response covers all three bullet points required by the prompt. You successfully describe the broken item as a clay flower pot, explain its importance because it was a 21st birthday gift from your grandmother who spent 15 days making it, and state what you would like your friend to do, which is to be honest in the future and not lie. The tone is appropriate for an informal letter to a friend, expressing disappointment and frustration clearly. Although some ideas like the attempts to repair the pot are simple, all parts of the task are addressed adequately. Therefore, this fulfills the requirements for a solid band score in task achievement.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The letter has a clear overall structure, opening with an appropriate salutation and closing with a sign-off. Ideas are organized into logical paragraphs, such as describing the discovery of the broken item in the second paragraph, explaining its emotional significance in the third paragraph, and expressing feelings about the friend's dishonesty in the fourth paragraph. However, cohesive devices are sometimes mechanical or missing, and referencing is occasionally unclear, such as in the sentence 'Apart from that you hide a truth from me'. Paragraphing could also be managed more smoothly to enhance the flow of ideas between the narrative of finding the broken item and the emotional reaction.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The vocabulary used is generally adequate for the task, allowing you to convey your message effectively. You attempt some less common vocabulary items such as 'emotional significance', 'express my concern', and 'valueable'. However, there are noticeable spelling and word choice errors throughout the text, including 'valueable' instead of valuable, 'approximatly' instead of approximately, and awkward phrasing like 'hide a truth from me' instead of 'hide the truth from me' or 'lied to me'. These lexical inaccuracies prevent the response from achieving a higher band, but they do not seriously impede communication.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response includes a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some variety in structure. For instance, you successfully use subordinate clauses in sentences like 'As you know this pot was given by my grandmother on my 21st birthday'. However, there are frequent grammatical and punctuation errors, particularly involving tense consistency, articles, and prepositions. Examples include 'when i came to home from my college trip and i left you at my home for take care', 'start searching', and 'This is really make me upset'. These errors require some effort from the reader to parse, though the overall meaning remains understandable.
