Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Amar,

Hope you are doing well, I am writing this letter because when i returned home i found my laptop was broken that is really valueable for me.

I was not accepting that from you, while staying in my apartment because that laptop was gifted by my dad when i compleated my matrix. I was really very emotionally attached with that and also i had a lot of memories with that laptop when i got my frirst job, as well as my childhood pictures in this gadget.

After returning home when i found my laptop in this condition, i was really disappointed from you because i can not imagine this. Now i just want from your side to help me to find good technician who will repair my laptop without loosing my data. i contacted many repair shops but that did not meet my requirements.

Waiting for your response

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The student successfully covers all three bullet points required by the prompt. The letter begins by describing the broken possession, identifying it as a laptop. It then explains why it is important, noting that it was a gift from the student's father after completing matriculation and contains cherished memories such as childhood pictures and the first job. Finally, the letter clearly outlines what the writer wants the friend to do: help find a good technician to repair the laptop without losing data. The tone is appropriate for a semi-formal or personal letter to a friend, expressing disappointment directly while maintaining communication. All parts of the task are adequately addressed, earning a solid Band 6.5 descriptor alignment, rounded to a Band 6.0 due to some under-developed explanation regarding prior repair attempts.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The letter maintains a coherent overall arrangement and follows a logical letter format from the salutation to the sign-off. However, paragraphing is weak; the body of the letter is condensed into two overly long, block-like paragraphs that merge multiple distinct ideas together. Cohesive devices are used, but they are sometimes mechanical or basic, such as 'when', 'while', and 'after returning home'. Referencing is generally clear, though the transition between sentences can feel slightly run-on, particularly in the second paragraph where multiple clauses are linked by comma splices and coordinating conjunctions. Overall organisation shows some logical progression, fitting the criteria for a Band 5.5 to 6.0 range, and is awarded a 6.0.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully communicating personal feelings and specific needs. Words like 'disappointed', 'technician', and 'requirements' are used appropriately. However, there are notable spelling errors ('valueable', 'compleated', 'frirst', 'loosing' instead of losing) and awkward word choices or collocations, such as 'emotionally attached with that' instead of 'to that', and 'not accepting that from you' instead of 'not expecting that'. Despite these limitations, the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the intended message clearly without impeding overall communication, matching the Band 5.5 to 6.0 descriptors.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response features a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating an attempt to use relative clauses and subordinate clauses (e.g., 'because when i returned home i found my laptop was broken that is really valueable for me'). However, control over punctuation and sentence boundaries is weak, resulting in run-on sentences and comma splices. There are also several grammatical errors, including capitalization slips ('i'), preposition misuse ('attached with that'), and tense inconsistencies. While these errors are frequent, they rarely impede the reader's understanding of the core message. This profile aligns closely with the Band 5.5 marking descriptors.
