Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Mani,

I hope you are doing splendidly. I am glad that your stay in my apartment comfortably. However, I like to bring your attention to the broken photoframe in the living area of my apartment. Once I reached my apartment I noticed that the photoframe was broken and the glass pieces was disposed. You could have told me regarding this

I was emotionally connected with that possession. This photoframe was a gift of my father on my 30th birthday. I always hold that close to my heart because it give me the sence of belongingness and warmth. As I am living far apart from my family, this Photoframe of my family ie always special for me. Whenever I see that frame, my heart always pull me back to my home.

I am expecting you to apologize for breaking the possession as well to reframe my photoframe as soon as possible.

I cant wait to hearing from you.

Lovingly,

Neethu

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The candidate successfully covers all three bullet points required by the prompt. First, the broken possession is described as a photoframe in the living area with broken glass. Second, the importance is clearly explained through its emotional connection as a 30th birthday gift from the student's father, which provides a sense of belonging and warmth. Third, the letter explicitly states what the writer would like the friend to do, namely to apologize and reframe the photo. The tone is generally appropriate for a letter to a friend regarding a sensitive issue, although parts of the phrasing are a bit abrupt. All requirements of the task have been addressed adequately, positioning this response solidly at Band 6.0.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The letter is divided into logical paragraphs that separate the greeting, the description of the item, its importance, the call to action, and the sign-off. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'Once I reached', 'As I am living', and 'Whenever I see that frame', which help connect ideas. However, paragraphing and referencing can occasionally feel a bit mechanical or abrupt, as seen in the sudden transition from the opening pleasantry to the complaint about the photoframe. Overall arrangement is coherent and progression is clear throughout the text, satisfying the criteria for a Band 6.0.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting less common phrases such as 'splendidly', 'belongingness', and 'emotionally connected'. However, there are several word choice and collocation inaccuracies throughout the text, such as 'stay in my apartment comfortably' instead of 'comfortable stay', 'gift of my father' instead of 'gift from my father', and 'glass pieces was disposed' rather than 'disposed of' or 'cleared away'. Spelling errors like 'photoframe' and 'sence' also occur. These errors do not impede communication, placing the vocabulary performance firmly at Band 6.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing relative clauses and conditional structures such as 'Whenever I see that frame, my heart always pull me back'. However, there are frequent grammatical errors in tense and agreement, including 'I like to bring' instead of 'I would like to bring', 'glass pieces was disposed' where the subject-verb agreement is incorrect, and 'cant wait to hearing' instead of 'can't wait to hear'. Despite these errors, meaning is generally clear and communication is not impeded. This performance corresponds to a Band 6.0.
