Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

The student covers all three bullet points required by the prompt: they describe the broken item (a wall clock), explain its importance (a gift from their grandmother for their 18th birthday with many memories), and state what they want the friend to do (repair it). However, the tone is somewhat overly aggressive and inappropriate for a friend ("cannot be controlled my enger"), and the letter fails the minimum word count requirement, containing only 113 words instead of the required 150. Consequently, the task is only partially addressed in terms of length and appropriate social register, corresponding to a Band 5.0.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The letter has a basic logical flow, moving from the greeting to the description of the problem, the reasons, and finally the demand and sign-off. Paragraphing is attempted, though some paragraphs are very brief or overly fragmented, such as "Thank you for your time. In addition, I am waiting for your response." Cohesive devices are used in a basic manner (e.g., "However", "In addition"), but referencing is occasionally faulty, and the progression of ideas feels somewhat abrupt and mechanical. This performance aligns well with the Band 5.0 descriptors for coherence and cohesion.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is generally basic and repetitive (e.g., repeating the word "broken" multiple times: "my valuable wall clock was broken. When I came back from trip it was broken. I was very upset when I saw that my favourite possession was broken"). There are noticeable word choice and spelling errors, such as "regarding about", "atteched", and "enger" (anger). The range is limited and minimally adequate for the task, fitting the Band 5.0 criteria.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The letter features a mix of simple sentences and a few attempted complex forms, but these are frequently marred by grammatical errors. Examples include "regarding about my valuable wall clock was broken" (double preposition/incorrect clause structure), "memories were atteched" (passive voice error), and "I cannot be controlled my enger" (incorrect passive/active mix and tense confusion). These frequent errors cause some difficulty for the reader and reflect a Band 5.0 grammar level.
