Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Roop,
I hope you are doing well. I hope your stay was comfortable there in my apartment while I was away. It was pleasure to have you there.
However, I am writing this letter to let you know that upon my return I found that the vase near the guest room's entrance was broken. I saw there was a clear crack on it. It was the bule and silver ceramic vase on the table.
To be honest, the vase is really important to me, as it was given to me by my grandmother on my graduation ceremony. Since, she passed last year it was one of the few memories of her that I have left. It has emotional and sentimental values rather than just the price.
I hope you would not mind helping me to repair it, as the crack is fresh, it can easily be restored by the professional. I really appericiate it, if you can find some nearby shop or factory that are specializes in ceramics and covering the cost of the fix, so that we could get it back to it's original condition.
I will look forward to your prompt reply and let me know what you think.
Warm regards,
Kamal

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 8.0
The response fully satisfies all requirements of the task. Kamal successfully describes the broken possession, identifying it as a 'bule and silver ceramic vase' located near the guest room's entrance. The second bullet point is thoroughly covered by explaining its sentimental value, noting that it was a gift from his grandmother for his graduation and serves as a precious memory since her passing last year. Finally, the letter clearly outlines what Kamal would like his friend to do, asking him to help find a local shop specializing in ceramics and to cover the repair costs. The tone is appropriate for a friend, balancing politeness with a clear request. All parts of the prompt are well-developed and easy to follow.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The letter is logically organised with a clear beginning, middle, and end, following standard informal letter conventions. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different ideas, such as the initial greeting, the description of the incident, the emotional significance of the vase, and the proposed resolution. Cohesive devices are generally well managed, with appropriate transitions like 'However', 'To be honest', and 'Since'. While referencing is mostly clear, a minor slip occurs with 'bule' instead of blue, and the flow could be slightly smoother in places, but overall the progression of ideas is easy to follow and coherent.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
Kamal demonstrates an adequate to good range of vocabulary appropriate for an informal yet serious letter. He successfully employs less common items and emotive phrases such as 'sentimental values', 'restored by the professional', and 'original condition'. However, there are a few spelling and word choice errors, including 'bule' (blue), 'appericiate' (appreciate), 'specializes' instead of specializing, and a minor typo with 'it's' instead of its. Despite these occasional inaccuracies, the vocabulary is sufficient to convey precise meaning and does not impede communication.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.0
The writer uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating good control over structures such as conditional and causal clauses ('as the crack is fresh, it can easily be restored', 'Since she passed last year it was one of the few memories'). There are a few grammatical errors and awkward phrasings, such as 'It was pleasure', missing articles, and slight preposition issues ('covering the cost' instead of 'cover the cost'). However, the majority of sentences are clear and error-free, and punctuation is generally sound. These minor inaccuracies do not impede communication.
