Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Friend,
I need to inform you that i am home now after being away on a trip. I want to remind you that you had stayed at my appartment when i was away on a trip and after returning at my apartment, i have found an item broken. It is a huge pink ceramic vase standing near my TV table in the living area. The said item has two big cracks in it; one at the brim and another at the base. It was very precious to me as it was a unique item which was gifted by my mothers' elder sister in my homewarming party. Since it is very close to my heart, I want you to repair the same or do the needful as early as possible.
Yours friend

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You successfully cover all three parts of the letter prompt, as you describe the broken possession as a huge pink ceramic vase, explain its importance by noting it was a unique gift from your aunt for your housewarming party, and state what you would like your friend to do by asking for a repair or the needful. However, some ideas are slightly under-developed, particularly the explanation of the damage and the proposed solution, which lacks specific details about repair options. Additionally, please note that the response is below the minimum length requirement, containing 132 words instead of the required 150 words, which prevents the task from being fully realised.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
Your letter has a coherent overall arrangement, and the reader can easily follow the sequence of events from returning home to discovering the damage. However, cohesion is at times mechanical or repetitive, such as the frequent reuse of the phrase 'trip' and 'apartment' in the opening sentences. Furthermore, paragraphing is not utilised effectively because the entire message is written as a single block of text rather than being divided into logical paragraphs for the greeting, the explanation, and the call to action, which detracts from the overall organisation.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully using functional terms such as 'precious', 'unique', and 'homewarming party'. There are some word choice and spelling inaccuracies, such as writing 'appartment' instead of 'apartment' and using the slightly unnatural phrase 'do the needful', which is common in Indian English but less standard internationally. These lexical errors do not impede communication, but they reflect a typical level where vocabulary is functional rather than precise or sophisticated.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, incorporating conjunctions like 'as' and 'since' to link clauses together. There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, such as the lowercase 'i' in the opening sentence and minor prepositional issues like 'returning at my apartment' instead of 'returning to my apartment'. Punctuation is also slightly weak due to the lack of proper paragraph breaks and the run-on nature of some sentences. Nevertheless, these errors rarely impede communication and the structures remain understandable throughout.
