Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response successfully covers all the key requirements outlined in the prompt, earning a solid score in this category. You clearly describe the broken item as a flower vase, explain its emotional significance as a gift from your late grandmother on your eighteenth birthday, and state what action you would like your friend to take by helping to find someone to repair it. The tone is appropriate for a friendly letter. However, some ideas remain slightly under-developed or are expressed with limited elaboration, particularly when explaining the specific circumstances of the damage. To reach a higher level, you could expand more fully on the details of the incident or provide more precise context regarding your expectations, ensuring every bullet point is explored with greater depth and fully articulated reasoning.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The letter maintains a generally coherent overall arrangement and follows a logical structure that moves from pleasantries and the purpose of the letter to the details of the broken item and the requested favour. Paragraphing is used to separate different thoughts, such as thanking the friend, describing the vase, and asking for assistance. However, cohesion is sometimes mechanical or features faulty referencing, such as the abrupt transitions between sentences and slightly awkward linking phrases like 'Besides' and 'lastly'. Pronoun referencing is also occasionally unclear, which disrupts the smooth flow of ideas. To achieve a higher standard, you should employ a wider range of cohesive devices more naturally and ensure that each paragraph transitions seamlessly into the next, creating a clearer progression of ideas from start to finish.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is adequate for communicating the basic message of the letter, but it remains limited in range and precision. You attempt some less common vocabulary items, but these are often accompanied by noticeable errors in word choice, spelling, and word form, such as 'placen' instead of placed, 'intentally' instead of intentionally, 'gifed' instead of gifted, 'gradmother' instead of grandmother, and 'recoginable' instead of familiar with. While these errors do not completely impede communication, they cause some difficulty for the reader and highlight a restricted control over lexical features. To improve this area, you need to expand your working vocabulary, pay closer attention to standard spelling conventions, and select precise collocations that convey your intended meaning accurately and naturally.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
Your writing demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, attempting various clauses to express your thoughts. However, there are frequent errors in grammar, punctuation, and prepositions that persist throughout the text, such as in the opening sentence 'while my trip' instead of during my trip, 'after comeback' instead of upon my return, and missing articles or incorrect prepositional patterns like 'repairing it for me'. Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with run-on clauses joined by commas rather than proper conjunctions or full stops. These errors indicate a limited range of control over complex grammatical forms. To progress further, you should focus on tightening your sentence construction, ensuring accurate subject-verb agreement, mastering tense consistency, and reducing basic grammatical slips.
