Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Marie,
I hope you are doing well.Additionaly, I would like to thank you for looking out for my appartment as i was away on a work trip. Unfortunately, when i came back into my appartment, I saw that my Vase was badly cracked from the down.
It was placed at the large shelf in my bedroom around the the left wall. The color of the vase was dark blue. Although that vase was not expensive at all, but it had a great sentimental value to me. Moreover, that vase was presented to me by my parents when i moved to this new appartment.
However I know these incidents can happen and additionally i dont want to blame you for anything. Although i would like you to help me in rectifying this situation. Can you please get it repaired at professional shop.
Please give me call so that we can sort this out.
Take care
Simran

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The letter addresses all three requirements clearly: you identify the possession as a dark-blue vase, explain that your parents gave it to you when you moved, and ask Marie to arrange professional repair. The explanation that it is not expensive but has sentimental value makes your reason understandable, while “I don’t want to blame you” keeps the tone considerate and appropriate for a friend. The request is clear, though it could be developed slightly by specifying who should cover the repair cost or asking Marie to contact you before arranging it. Overall, the purpose and relationship are maintained throughout, and the key ideas are supported with relevant detail.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The information follows a sensible sequence: you thank Marie, describe what you found, explain the vase’s significance, and then make a request. Paragraph breaks help distinguish these stages, and the closing is suitable. You also use linking expressions such as “Unfortunately,” “Moreover,” and “However.” At times, though, these links feel mechanical or do not express the relationship accurately: “However” does not clearly contrast with the preceding sentence, and “Although” is used in a sentence that does not complete the expected contrast. The description of the vase’s location also interrupts the explanation of its condition. More natural transitions and tighter grouping of related details would make the progression smoother.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use enough vocabulary to communicate the situation and the personal importance of the vase, including “badly cracked,” “sentimental value,” and “rectifying this situation.” However, the range is limited, and several word-choice, spelling, and collocation problems reduce naturalness. “Looking out for my apartment” is not the most precise way to describe caring for it, while “cracked from the down” is unclear. There are also spelling errors such as “Additionaly” and “appartment,” and “professional shop” is an unnatural phrase. Aim for accurate, idiomatic expressions rather than adding formal-sounding vocabulary where a simpler phrase would be clearer.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The letter includes both simple sentences and attempts at more complex structures, for example, “Although that vase was not expensive at all, but it had a great sentimental value to me.” However, this construction is faulty because “although” and “but” should not be used together in this way. Other errors include “I would like you to help me in rectifying,” which needs a more natural grammatical pattern, and “Please give me call,” which is missing an article. Punctuation and spacing are also inconsistent, as in “doing well.Additionaly” and “Unfortunately, when.” These issues sometimes make the phrasing awkward, although the main message remains understandable. Practise accurate subordinate clauses and check articles, sentence boundaries, and punctuation.
