Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Ram,
I hope you're doing well. I am writing to you to complain about a valuable thing broken while you was stay at my apartment.
As you know, I did a favour to allow you live in my home while I was on a business trip. However, when I reached at home, I was shocked because one of the clocks was damaged at my home.
I loved that particular watch because my grandfather gifted me that when I just moved to my new house. Additionally, it was close to my heart and very expensive due to antic look.
It would be great if you could repair this watch. I believe you just have to change the front glass and fix the needels. As my grandfather will be here on next month please repaired it before he will be here.
Thank you for your consideration to this matter. I look forward to resolve this matter in friendly way.
Yours sincerely,
Parm

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You address all three required points: you identify the damaged clock, explain its sentimental and financial value, and ask Ram to arrange a repair. The detail that your grandfather gave it to you when you moved makes its personal importance clear, while the request to replace the glass and fix the hands is practical. However, some ideas are not fully clear or developed. You call the item a “clock” and later a “watch,” so the reader cannot be certain what was broken. The reason it is expensive—its “antic look”—could also be explained more clearly. Clarifying the object and adding a little detail about the damage or repair arrangement would make the letter more complete and precise.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The letter has a clear overall arrangement: you open by explaining your purpose, give the circumstances and importance of the item, then make a request and close politely. Paragraphing supports this progression, and phrases such as “However” and “Additionally” help connect ideas. This meets the lower-band expectation of coherent organisation and shows some of the flexibility associated with stronger cohesion. At times, though, links and references are not fully clear. For example, “one of the clocks” becomes “that particular watch,” and “that” in the next paragraph could refer to either the clock or the gift. The closing sentence, “I look forward to resolve this matter,” also does not express the intended relationship smoothly. Use consistent references and clearer transitions between the damage, its significance, and your request.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use enough vocabulary to communicate the main message, including “valuable,” “damaged,” “close to my heart,” and “repair.” There are also attempts at more specific language, such as describing the item’s appearance and naming the parts that need attention. However, several choices or spellings are inaccurate or unnatural, which limits precision: “antic look” is not the intended form, “needels” is misspelled, and “do a favour to allow you live” is awkward. The inconsistent use of “clock” and “watch” also makes the description less precise. Choose familiar collocations carefully and check spelling; more accurate wording will make the letter sound natural without requiring a much wider vocabulary.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You use both simple sentences and some longer structures, including “I loved that particular watch because…” and “As my grandfather will be here…,” so there is an attempt to vary sentence forms. The main message remains understandable, but some grammatical errors occur in verb forms, tense, and sentence patterns. For example, “while you was stay” should be “while you were staying,” and “I did a favour to allow you live” needs a structure such as “I did you a favour by allowing you to stay.” In the request, “please repaired it before he will be here” should use “please repair it before he arrives.” Practise accurate verb patterns and time clauses, while retaining the longer sentences you have attempted.
